These trees were supposed to have been planted in 1820, and traces of this old orchard still remain. History. also shows that, Captain Joseph Aram, one of General Fremont’s chief aides made a quick trip from Sacramento to San Jose in 1846 with his company of troops, to disperse a band of marauding Mexi-. cans who were threatening the town, and remained to start a nursery in which the apple prominently figured. Captain Aram .was one of those to write the first state constitution at Monterey, and he represented San Jose in the first legislature. The numiber of apple trees increased rapidly in California’s first ten years of statehood, but since that! itime the increase has been relatively slow. In 1910-there were 2,482,762 . : bearing apple trees, while in 1930 the number had increased to 2,870,417. The number of nonbearing trees has barely mainitained an even production in recent years. The crop has varied between 5,000,000 and 10,000,000 bushels in recent years, but , To anybody $ ay, since 1930 has been under the latter figure. : ‘ : : almost ANYWHERE Ever: since a certain Chinaman was given to ,understand that he could not pack dried apples with his bare feet, the industry has made marked Edwards’ DEPENDABLE WHITE KING, Large pkg. .
