IN MEMORY
In honor of the late William Hussy and out of respect to his siste.,
Mrs. Flewellan, our advisor anu
teacher, the staff takes this opportunity to offer sympathy during the
sad bereavement of the family.
Mr. Hussy, who at the time of
his untimely death, was residing in
Berkeley,’ was a popular and well
known ma nof this community and
the Bay region. It.is only too sad
to realize that this blow should
strike the family during the Yuletide season. However, Fate decreed such an act, and the staff
wishes them a year of peace, contentment, and happiness.
HAPPY NEW YEAR
Every one must have had a pleasant vacation by the spirit and good
attendance that has been’ prevalent
during the past week. The-senior
class is sorry not to have been able
to sponsor the coming of Santa and
the Christmas tree, but the unexpected closing of school deprived the
“children’’ of that important affair.
However, a year will pass by quickly.
Presents, turkey dinners, candy,
Santa Claus, lighted trees, and the
Christmas Carols have all passed
with the old year. Father Time is

IN AND ABOUT SCHOOL
Everybody—or most -everybody—
has recuperated from the flu and is
back to school and hard work. However, not everyone has fared so well.
Miss Flewellan is ill this week. In
spite of the fact that Quill pictures
were postponed for several weeks
so that all the teachers and as many
students’ as possible could’ be included, Mis Flewellan was not able
to be at school the day they were
taken.
Miss Tremaine, MrSweeney, and
Mr. Kjorlie were other faculty victims of the influenza. >

my! Why, “Flis’’ Horn and ‘‘Chick’’
Barker, of course.
Coach Barron and Mr. Kjorlie at-1!
tended a meeting of coaches from all
northern California in -Lodi Saturday. The purpose of the meeting
was to draw up the Athletic Schedule for this year and next. There
were 40 schools represented at the
meeting. The Lodi Home Economics
class of the high school served a delightful dinner to’ the guests.
How do you like our new pictures?
We are giad to welcome into our
midst our two new students—John
Bankus, from Greenville, California
and Alice Chapin of Oroville.
We are all mighty proud of the
new band costumes.
I just know you kids can hardly

LOCAL BOY MAKES GOOD
Everyone has -heard—of-that-greatest opus of all time.” The Unwritten Symphony, but few know that
it was composed by one of Nevada
City’s owff, Mr. Leslie Sweeny.
The entire symphony is written in
slow motion. The first movement
written in 1776, is played by the
hat band. The other movements
following in order are played by
special instruments such as the shoehorn, the ear-drum, and the second-. !
fiddle.
It is believed that the publie will
be given an opportunity at an early
date to hear this celebrated work as
directed by the composer himself
and played by members of the high
school band and orchestra. Pérhaps
a few readers have chanced by the
band room and heard the melodious
strains of this great work on which
even now they are practicing.
At any rate if the opportunity to
hear this symphony ever comes your
way, don’t fail to see it!
PICTURES FOR ANNUAL
“Look at the birdies’ this was
heard many times from Mr. Maurice on Friday January 6. You
gwessed it, he was. taking the picturésfor the 1933 (Quill. Mr.
Maurice started to take the pictures
at 9:00 a. m. and was taking them
until 3:00 p.m. Friday afternoon.
Bob Tamblyn wonders if he is going to be a movie star as he had his
picture taken: ten different. times
Friday. Consequently we thought
we would just leave him out of the
‘Searchlight picture but, in doing so
we aiso cut out Phyliss Horn, Naomi Whitney and Mary Ozalli. .The
latter. all were in History and were
over looked when the other Searchlight members. were called out of
their classes. So to make a long
story short, the Searchlight picture
was retaken. This time we thought
it better not to try and. cut Bob out.
We are wondering how many boys
Mr. Kjorlie lent his necktie to this
year. Las year Mr. Kjorli’s. necktie was in most every picture but
on a different neck each time.
As the different pictures were taken the pupils were called out of
their classes when needed. The following pictures were taken: Freshmen Class, Sophomore Class, Junior
Class, Band, Orchestra, Block N. GS
Quill Staff, Searchlight Staff, Football, Basketball, Student Council.
Honor Society, Chorus, Representives
‘of Older Girls Conference, Representives of Ilder Boys Conference.
THOUGHTS IN RYME
Calvin Coolidge
A man of public service, dead.
The Fates have cut the cord.
And he who has our nation led
Has passed to his reward.
A life of love and kindness
wrought
Did Calvin Coolidge lead.
A service was his very thought
And honesty his creed.
And though on earth, he is not
here
His spirit lingers by
With all his strength and earthly
cheer
And which can never die.
To Calvin Coolidge president—
And Calvin Coolidge man.
FROZEN RADIATORS
Whendriving in the higher altitudes during winter motorists should
always drain their radiators to prevent freezing when stopping for the
night, advises the Free Emergency
Road Service of the California State
Automobile Association. Even in
the daytime the radiator may freeze
if the ear is left standing in low
temperature weather for any length
of time. . Warm water is best for
refilling the radiator.

Responsibility
The work of conducting
funerals is regarded as a professional service because it requires individual training and
experience, and because it involves a grave moral responsibility to the public. This
kind of service can never be
given by an _ impersonal

association operating through
hired managers. Our patrons
deal with the owners of the
