I wonder if the plopping sounds
Heard almost everywhere,
Are New Year’s resolutions
Exploding in the air;
I wonder if my own resolves,
Will last the, twelve months through,
Or will they bend and snap and break
While still the year is new?
I wonder now that the sounds, sights and effects of holiday celebrations are definitely of the past, how our New
Year's resolutions, made during moments of hilarity, semiconscionsness or exaltation, may be kept intact and in fairly
good working order.
Just before that battered old year, 1938 slipped through
the portals of yesterday, . examined several good resolutions
which I had made a short twelve months before; they seemed
to be in a sorry state of utter collapse—they did indeed.
I wonder how yours came through; in about the same
condition? Oh well, never mind.
Of course in these days of kaleidoscopic changes, there
is no time to waste in futile regrets; the only thing to do now,
is to drop the entire clanpamfrie of broken resolutions into
Father Time's all consuming incinerator, and make a few better, wiser and stronger resolutions with which to pledge
young Thirty Nine.
I wonder if Thirty Nine will bring ever increasing life
and activity to certain communities of the Mother Lode regon of northern California. With the building of debris dams,
the projected resumption of hydraulic mining, and the coming
of electricity, these little cities that used to be, are coming
back and looking forward. The Thirty Niners are becoming
numerous and displaying all the verve, vim and vigor once
exhibited by the Forty Niners of old.
I wonder if you have ever pondered this crisp command:
“Be what thou prayest to be made.” It is inspiringly suggestive and, for the moment, fires the imagination and fills one
with winged aspirations and lively determination. Could it be
literally obeyed? Could one take things into one’s own hands
and become what one has long prayed to be? It might be insome of us would be should it prove successful.
