EXOTIC HOBBIES DEPARTMENT
—iWarren Barnes, Tahoe National
Forest ranger raises orchids in “his
spare time. He has the greenhouse
i nhig yard on “A’’ street next to the
(Cillet nurséries. The expensive blooms

which come forth, with good luck,
once a year, take seven years to
mature and blossom. A prescribed
temperature and humidity must be
. maintained. Barnes achieves these
necessary factors by means of a Bu‘Tcloths. Because the orchid plants
were disturbed by the recent transferral from the. bay area tothe Sierras, it appears that they will skip
blooming this year altogether.
STEEPEST STREET IN TOWN
DEPARTMENT: What.do YOU think
‘lis. the town’s most vertical thorough-fare? Nevada Street? Washington?
. Boulder? Nope. It’s Court Street, the
one block long avenue that extends
from Cayote to Main Street. It goes
in back of the Catholic Parish House
‘and comes into Main Street just beHilow Fred F. Cassidy’s. :
WE DO HAVE A HOME INDUS: TRY DEPARTMENT: Now that the
Miner’s Foundry and Manufacturing
(Co. has swung into production with
the H. Y. P. Healthmaster, a patented
machine for extracting the juice from
vegetables and fruits, Nevada City
can truthfully lay claim to having a
home industy other than mining?
The new juicer, is a handsome, polished gadget that is being nationally. advertised. —
INADEQUATE ROADS DEPARTMPNT: ,Northern California, suffers
from a number of traffic. bottienecks, among them the Fairfield and
North Sacramento sections, but first
prize jn pure annoyance should be
i awarded to -the Nevada City-Grass
4 Valley. Highiway. This heavily travlanes instead of two. The highway
i seems to seek out every curve that
. eould possibly be manufactured. The
} . surface’ isn’t too bad, but the congestion is. Since the old roads. have
lf heen resurfaced many people reHW isort to traveling ‘between the two
towns via side roads inorder to avoid
the disagreeable congestion. As soon
. as we get the Indian Mat segment,
i}; we ought to start working on the
Highway Commission to get them to

WHAT NEXT DEPARTMENT: If
you see an aitractive forest service
secretary putting a case with a glass
side on the sidewalk in front of the
office on Pine Street on a sunny
day, you’ll know fhat she‘s doing
providing you read the rest of the
paragraph. She’s making. a, ‘“‘blackline” copy of a map. The process ining paper on top of chemically treated paper when the sun hits the two
sheets in the glass case; a map in
black line appears on the chemical
Osmosis? Alchemy? And what happens on days when the sun doesn’t
shine? They just don’t make “blackline’? maps. We wish we could say
that this sunshine map-making.is in
use only in California, but unortunately we can't.
WEATHER DEPARTMENT: It’s
too good to be true, say Nevada Citylans of the freak Indian summer thay
have been ejoyimg. Everyone anti-cipates a-long tough stretch of wetness and wind, with old man Sunshine disappearing or an extended
vacation after working txertme’ overtime. Perhaps Sol will disappear and
put in for portal-toiportal pay, with
double-time for solstices. f
GARBAGE DEPARTMENT: You’d
never believe it, but the local scavenger service reports plenty of péople in town are too tight to pungle
four bits’ a month for garbage service. What on earth do thay do wit
it? Bury it? Hide it?: Mail it to their
friends as a practical poke?
