Forest Service observed after a series of conflagrations had given the}
.
rangers and CCC enrollees a hectic}
time in a number of national forests .
this past fortnight.
‘Now with the Fourth of July]
coming along, fireworks will add io]
the danger,’’ the forester declared. .
“The spirit of the Fourth does not}
call for shooting off fireworks in the .
woods or on highways. That sort of}
whoopie is much too hazardous for .
our forests and agricultural lands.”’ .
Despite stringent State and Fed-.
eral laws, forest fires caused hy fire
crackers, smokers, camrers and the;
other human agents amounted to 83 .
per cent of the stats’s 8730 fires last]
year. An area of 730,000 acres was
burned. .
Fire protection forces say that it!
will take forethought ‘and coopera-!
tion on the part of the public to overcome this annual destruction. j
With the present fire season in
full swing and no letup expected until late fall forest rangers are keeping a close eye on the twice daily
reports of the U. S. Weather Bu-.
reau. Local forecasts of impending .
changes in weather form the basis .
for the modern fire danger rating
system.
Variations in temperature, relative .
humidity, wind velocity and direc.
tion, and 24 hour precipitation rec.
ords may mean the difference between a small fire that can be con-;
trolled by one forest fireman and a}
widespread conflagration requiring .
the services of a thousand -CCC en-.
rollees and volunteer fire fighters. .
