The fidusiry of Destruction . sf Any activity which, in a single state, involves more than . three miliions of dollars yearly might almost be called an in-' . dustry. Yet it is doubtful if Californians would care to claim . that distinction for the crop of forest fires which in 1936 de_vastated 946,850 acres at a loss to the state of $3,173,705. Rigures released recently by Merritt B. Pratt of.the State Bureeu of Forestry zeveal not only that California's forest fire: ‘bill. last year was four times what it was in 1935, but that the: _stagce:ing increase must be attributed in great part to-neglig-ence which can only be described as criminal. Of the 6113 separate blazes reported to the Forestry Bureau during the twelve month period, . 39 were started by lightening and 724 were deiinitely proved to be of incendiary origin. But the major responsibility for the holocaust which razed timber, blackened farm lands and damaged watersheds must be laid at the door of the thougthless smoker and the careless campMan has no recourse against the lightening. He can send ‘‘the arsonist to jail, but how can he deal with three million dol“lars worth of negligence? Between the incendiarist and the man who unthinkingly flips a lighted ciragette into a pile of brush, there is-this to be said for the former. By the very nature of his deed, the firebug is a mental case, but no such defense can be erected for the camper who leaves smoldering debris behind him. In the eyes of the law, he may be less guilty than the incendiarist, but to the people who must bear the cost of such destruction, his is the greater crime. a ' * Forester Pratt’s figures represent a new record which _ Californians would do well to wipe off the books. —-——-—107 Mill St. The studio that satisfies. FOR SALE—A St: Circus Pet Chimpanzee Near Human in Conduct j The thin line of distinction that rests between the anthropoid apes of the animal kingdom and the human race is demonstrated. by Topsy, the beloved chimpanzee mascot of Russell Bros, Circus, to be seen at Cashin Field on Wednesday, July 21. The circus people see much in conduet that is akin-to human. She wears clothes and eats her mea's in the dining room tent with the rest of the circus ‘“‘family.’’ She delights in bathing her hands in a hasin of water, is adept in the use of a washboard, and is fascinated by jsoapsuds. A. book worthy of your.consideration is . Delay ‘n the Sun by Anthony Thorne . nubl’shed by the Literary Guild, of. . New York. A ravidly winging story of a g roup of travellers stranded, owing to a} ‘bus strike, in the small Spanish town of Querinda.
