Bond's Speeeh.
The Grass Valley Union gives this
version of an incident in real life: At
a bangnet, given by John Rector, of
the Nationa? Hotel, at Nevada City
several days ago, E. Bond, our County
Assessor, was one of the guests.
Numerous toasts were drank, speeches
were made and a general good time
wasindelged in. There was a comparative stranger at the feast and
Henry Lane told Bond that. said
Stranger was a Frenchman. Bond
Was soon called on for ‘ta few remarks,’’ and, with that Abe Lincoln
like style of his, he painted a picture
of the Revolutionary war and made
itis central tigure the great Lafayette.
He gaw him with the immortal Washington; pictured him on the many
hard fought fields of that heroic time.
Bond was eloquent. He saw Lafayette
in the dungeon of Olmutz. Bond
spoke of him as the volunteer of
freedom—the advocate of haman
rights-+-the defender cf civil liberty—
tke patriot, the philanthropi-t, the
beloved of the good and the fr e.
When the speaker sat down a friend
asked him what that speech had to do
with the election bet that Rector was
paying them with his banquet. “Oh,
nothing,”’ said Bond, “I just wanted
to say something to plea:e our French
guest.” “French be d—; that
fellow isa Swede.” The last that har
been seen of Bond was his long stride
through a glass door taking sash anu
all.

“
On last Thanksgiving Day the cow
belonging to John Hitchens, who
lives on Gold Flat near this city, failed
to put inan appearance at the accustomed time. After some delay
search was instituted and the country
around well traversed without discovering the missing bovine. The
next day and for a couple of days
following the search was continued,
butit only resulted in disappointment,
and the owner gave his cow up as
“lost, strayed or stolen.” He has
since been anxiously awaiting her return home or to obtain some information regarding her. Last Sunday, 11
days after she was lost, as a young lad
named Tommie Bennetts was going
along an old road or trail near John
Loughead’s place, he heard a faint
tinkling of a cow bell and not" seeing
any cows near by. paused and waited
to ascertain where the sound > proceeded from. Pretty soon he heard it
again, and being directed by the
sound came to an old mining shaft.
teering down to the bottom, a distance
uf 15 feet, he saw the long. lost cow.
There had been a plank put across the
shaft for & crossing and in attempting
tocross it the animal had been precipitated to the bottom by the breaking of the board. He immediately
notified the owner, who with the
assistance cf neighbors managed tuo
extricate the cow from her puainial
position and raise her to the’ surface.
The poor animal was by her long continement reduced to a mere skeleton,
but notwith. tanding this she sturted
uff at a rapid gait and did not stop
until she. reached home, where. she
received unusual care. Although
vadly bruised from her fall and much
weakened and exhausted from the
confinement and exposure from the
recent sturms, ‘‘Muley” is iusproving
rapidly and wil soon be ready fu
another adventure. This is surely «
remukible example of «a cow’r
powers of endurance when put-to the
test.

The Use of Wine.
Kate Field, agent for the California
State Viticultural Commi-sion, writes
that she will soon deliver her firat
lecture in New York. In her series of

the tuble of California wines. Miss
Field says she is meeting with some
opposition from the temperance people,
who are strongly prejudiced xgainst

Shut Down For the Season.

they are busy on stock for orange
boxes. They have put another cutoff
saw and a gang edger of four saws in
the planing mill.

APOLLON MAYKOFF.
Buesia’s Greatest Poet—Honered
by the Czar.
Russian literature presents no greater name than that of Apollon Maykoff,
Recently the litterateurs of the Czar’s
capital celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of the poetical work of that
great poet, on which occasion the
Czar promoted him to the rank of
Privy Councilor, which is a civil rank
corresponding to that of general in the
army. Asa poet, Mr. Maykoff displays cultivated taste and imayination
of requisite purity. He is a profound
scholar whose philosopy has had a
decided effect on the institutions of
‘his native: country. He displays a
marvelous command of language, and
his character’zations and delineations
are executed with a peculiar vividness
and power. His work has the easy
flow of a ready and Original writer,
and his poems are full of fire, v.gor
tad enthusiasm. Apollon Maykoff ir
undoubtedly the foremost poet of Rusaa of today, and his poems are known
all over that country, His poems ure
leservedly included among the Russian classics, together with those of
Pushkin, Derjavin, Jankvosky and a
few other poetical stars of. Russia.
Maykoff may not be ranked by critics
among the great poets of the world,
but it is for but few to have the love
and tender regard which he holds
froin the people of his native land. As
a representative Rassian poet he has
no living rival in popular esteem, and’
that he is a man of brilliant wit,’ wide
information and strong purposes is
Proven by the success he has achieved,

The Overland Monthly.
The Overland Monthly for December winds up in good style a fine volume. Its leading articleis ‘From
Klamath to Rio Grande,” a discursive
xccouut of pleasant ramblings all over
the coast by Charles H. Shinn.
There is the first of a series of articles upon hydraulic mining, from, the
pen of Irving M. Scott, the well-known
iron founder of San Francisco. Itis
descriptive in character, accompanied
dams, ard other devices employed in
t.e hydraulic process. It contains
nothing of a controversial charac er.
It is interesting to note that Mr. Scott
includes among the ‘‘pre-requisites”’
of ‘“‘paying” hydraulic mining, the requirement of ‘‘svffigient space in which
to lodge or shel} Wepoes of the detritus
or debris.” ;
The stories are in unusual quantity,
as becomes the holiday season, and the
rest of the number is mainly taken up
by sketchy and. amusing articles on
various parts of the Pacific coast, from
Costa Rica to the Coos, the only solid
article in the number being Mrs. John
C. Hall’s able presentation of the
causes of {‘The Decline of our Merchant
Marine.” :
Book reviews are in profusion and
of the Overland’s usual high grade,
and the departments complete a good
number.
The issue is given a further holiday
look by tail pieces ‘in designs of California flowers and foliage.
Altogether, the Overland deserves
well of the public, and its promises for
the new year, together with its abundant ability, long proven, to keep its
promises, will win it in 1889 a place on
a still increasing number of center
tables. oan
