a ¥ a acca ‘Marriage After Dark Not Legal in England Although divorce is on the increase in Dngiand, it is difficult to achieve and ‘seekers after legal separations often find it easier to find A flaw in the union itself, thus bringing about a dissolution on the ground that they were not truly married in the first place. English courts have held, for example, that marriage by registration may be legal in Russia but cannot be so recognized in England. A _ Russian woman who sued for judicial separation and maintenance, stating that she and her mate had registered their union in Moscew, got the separation all right, but had no legal claim for » Maintenance when the court said: “I have come to the conclusion that the petitioner and respondent were never husband and wife.” In another case a man accused of deserting his family defended himself on the ground that he married the girl after dark. He was not joking. A marriage in England outside the hours -between eight in the moring and three in the afternoon is no more legal than a whisky and soda bought at a bar after regular hours. Finest Parchment Made in Small English Town In Havant, Hampshire, England, there flourishes a band of men eéngaged in making the finest parchment in the world. They possess a_ skill that has been passed from. father to gon for centuries; in fact, before Norman times men were dressing sheepskins at Havant, and their descendants follow the same trade. At pres‘ent there is one man who has worked at it for 75 years; two other men have 62 and 60 years’ service behind them. One of the partners in the firm is a magic spring. Parchment making is a long process, and water plays a great part. At Havant there is a spring. of ‘@ special degree of chalkiness, and although chemical experiments have been made, no water has been produced that can rival this spring, which produces a pearliness to be found in no other parchment. Swinburne’s Rating Poor Swinburne’s admiration for large families might have been somewhat tempered (suggests a correspondent) if he had known of the remarks with which he had been disposed of by a young nephew of his own. This lad was a boarder at a fameus public school in Edinburgh, and one day the English master asked his rather pompously, “Are you any relative, my boy, of the great poet Algernon Charles Swinburne?” With a nervous glance around at the others, the boy blurted out, ‘Yes, sir! He’s my uncle.” And then, in an outburst of confidence, added, “But he’s an awful ass, sir!” For this crisp summing-up the other boys loved him.—Manchester (Hngland) Guardian. Middle Name Custom The practice of giving a middle name to children was unknown in England before the period of the Stuarts, and it did not become at all common until Georgian times. There was, in fact, a law on the statute books forbidding parents to give more than one name to their children.. The same conditions prevailed in North America. Not a member of the Mayflower party had a middle name and there are only three among the signatures to the Declaration of Independence. The first five Presidents of the United States had one Christian name only. Most Expensive Avccation The most expensive avocation which a wealthy man can find is dairying, according to the business monthly Fortune. Blooded cows cost: from $300 to $25,000 a head, bulls up to $100,000. With tiled walls, vita glass windows, ice plants and ventilating systems, equipment of dairy and barn hovers around $600 a head. And, of course, there’s the pay roll. At a luncheon Mr. Charles M. Schwab once offere} his guests their choice of champagne or milk. “Gentlemen,” he said, “they both cost the same.” Old Flags In the picture of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, by John Trumbull, the flags shown are all Colonial flags that preceded the Stars and Stripes. One is the Grand Union flag, on which the stripes appeared jn conjunction with the British union. — The Red Union Ensign is -also-showan, with the English red cross on white, and with blue background. The others arve™smilar ones, containing the British union or cross. Memory Test Mary needed some information to ‘be found in the-book entitled “Out of . Doors in the Holy Land.” She felt ghe could never remember the name, Her roommate told her to think of Jerusalem and of the beauties of the. outdoors. ee ST, KTICHEN 4 CABINET &2 All hearts rejoice in welcoming The first green buds of early spring, All pulses faster seem to beat When the first breeze blows soft and sweet, And none indifferent can pass The first red, robin on the grass, —LEdgar A. Guest, VARIOUS GOOD THINGS This is the season of the year when lamb is at its best. A crown roast of dlamb makes a most imposing appearance for a,dinner. The nice thing about the crown roast is. that it is so easy to carve. ‘There is an old saying among the French that it is as disgraceful for a host to be ignorant of carving as it “% to have a fine library. and not know how to read. ° The art of carving 1s a most useful and graceful accomplishment, and it should form a part of the education of every young nmmn and woman. Begin with the easy meats-to carve, and the more complicated will not seem so overwhelming. The carver’s seat should be high enough to bring the elbows on a line with the table, with ample room for moving the arms. The cut of meat or fowl] should be placed on a platter large enough to allow the joint to be earved without danger to the cloth. The garnishment should never interfere with the work of the carver. Such garnishes as parsley and watercress may be laid aside and will not prove objectionable. With a crown roast all the carver has to do ts to cut down between every rib. Each piece is then ready to serve. Cocktail Sauce.—Those who enjoy the shrimp or oyster cocktails or the simpler one of fruit prepared from grapefruit or oranges will like a homemade sauce. Take two teaspoonfuls of grated horse radish, three tablespoonfuls of catsup, one teaspoonful of salt, two tablespoonfuls of lemon juice, four tablespoonfuls of grapefruit juice and one-fourth of a teaspoonful of tabasco sauce. Mix all the ingredients and pour over the cocktail. For spring lamb mint sauce is favored. Crush a bunch of mint, cover with a tablespoonful of each of water and lemon juice, boiling hot, add a tablespoonful of powdered sugar and serve. Have the mint. finely chopped. Serve mayonnaise on cooked cauliflower instead of the usual butter or cream sauce. we : Nerecs Mar weld NOT UP ON BURNS PHL Joyce. She—Have you ever read any books on Burns, Mr. Sapp?
