Not so long age chemists discovered a drug that would .
literally burn the fat from a person's body. They called it .
dinitrophenol, and soon afterward it became available to the.
public at drug stores.
Today several women in California are walking about in
total darkness, temporarily blinded because they took this
4 drug in an attempt to reduce rapidly.
That such a thing could happen among civilized people
who are supposed to have set up at least elementary safeguards of health, is almost unbelievable. Ue
Where were our state and national drug laws, when these
women were buying this drug with good faith in someone s
assurance that it was harmless, properly used?
The twelve known cases in San Francisco bay area were
brought to public attention the other day only because scientists of Stanford University began a study of the effects of
the drug. Unquestionably dozens more have suffered.
Scientists, always hyper-cautions, would not come out
and say flatly that the drug had caused the blindness. But
they did advise against its use. And cause and effect in these
cases are pretty obvious. Se
All twelve women had taken the drug, all twelve had
gone-blind temporarily, and all twelve were living normally
otherwise, with the exception of dieting. Have you ever
heard of dieting causing blindness?
The unhappy truth is that our drug laws, as well as our
pure food laws, are sorrowfully inadequate. Quack drugs,
harmful, fake remedies with the enforcement of quack doctors and the sanction of the law are still freely sold, in spite
of the popular illusion that laws protect us in these matters.
Blindness, disease and premature death will continue to
result unless public opinion demands that California, at
least, enact an intelligent law, and see that it is intelligently
administered.
Meanwhile the best we can do is to watch what we buy,
