Eager to Condemn.
The Marysville Appeal has set
its seal of. condemnation upon the
debris dam built by: the Liberty
Hill hydraulic mining company,
and upbraids Judge Sabin of the
U. 8. Circuit Court for permitting
a fifteen days’ trial of the efficacy
of the structure. The Appeal
writer has not visited the mine,
and is not informed as to the details of the measures taken to prevent the sli@kens from passing
into the main channel of Bear river; but on general principles it
bitterly criticises the action of the
court in permitting a trial to be
made. It asserts without knowing what it is talking about that
there is no use in trying’ to hold
back the mud and sand behind the
dam, and then adds that the dam

impurity and vice can be known.
No one 1n these days would counterfeita Coniederate bond or note.
People who commit fraud alwaysdo it by simulating the bighest virtue ; by preying on the cleanest reputation, by employing the .
fair name’ol virtue with which to
give respectability to vice.
Let us explain: seven or eight
years ago, 80 we have been iniormed many times in.public print,
a New York Stute gentieman was
pronounced,as many millions have
-peen pronounced betore, incurably
ick of an extreme disorder. by
# izgestions which he believed were
providentual, he was. jea to the
use of a preparation which haa
been for several years employed
by a.select few physicians in New
York City and one or two other
prominent places. ‘Ihe result was
that he was cured, he wnom doctors without s@im@ber, and of conceded ability, seid was incurable.
Haying secured possession of the
formula, absolutely and irrevovaply, he determined to devote a
portion of his accumulated wealth
to the manufacture and saie ot
this remedy tor tne benefit of the
many who sutfer as he suffered, in
apparent hopelessness. In -Jess
than three years, so_ tremendous
became the demund for this remedy, and so exalted the reputation, that he was obliged for his
purpose to erecta laboratory and
warehouse containing four and a
quarter acres ot flooring, and filled
with the most approved chemical
and manufacturing devices. Frubably there never was a remedy
that has won such. a meritorious
name, such extraordinary sales,
and has accomplished so much
good for the race.
Unprincipled parties, who flourish oniy on the ruins of others,
saw in this reputation and sale an
opportunity to reap a golden harvest (not legitimately, not honororably), for which purpose they
have made imitations and substtutions of it inevery sec’‘on of the
country, and many druggists, who
can make alarger profit on these
imitation goods, olten comp omise
their honor .by forcing a sale upon the unposted customer.
Yes,; undoubtedly the manufacturers could well atford to ignore
such instances of fraud so far as
the effect upon themselves is concerned, for their remedies have a
constant and unremitting sale,
hnt thoy foal it to bo thoim <tuty to
warn the public against such imitations and substitutions, mon-secret and otherwise. . ‘Ihe individwho countenances their sale, alone
suffer in mind, body, and estate
therefor.
The authors*of some of these
fraudulent practices have been
prosecuted and sent to prison for
their crimes; but there is another
class_who-claim to know the formula of this remedy, and one
Sunday-School journal, we are
told, has prostituted its high and
holy calling so far as to advertise
that for twenty-five cents~it will
send all new subscribers a transcript of ,the Warner formula !
fhis formula by the way, must be
a wonderiul kaleidoscopic affair,
for there is hardly a month passes
some paper is not issued which
pretends to give the only correct
formula! .
The manufacturers inform us
that they would be perfectly will‘ing that the public should know.
what the tre formula of Warner’s
Safe Cure is (none that have been
published are anything like it),
but evenifevery man, woman,
andchild in the United States
were as familiar with this formula
as with their A B C’s they could
not compound the remedy. . The
method of manufacture is a secret.
It is impossible to obtain the results that are wrought by this
remedy if one does not have the
water. The wish is father to the
thought, and must tend to demonstrate more plainly than ever to
the people of the State at large
that the ignorance of our contemporary on the debris question is
excelled by nothing but its bitter
hatred and narrow-mind prejudice
against the miners and all that
pertains to mining. Fortunately
the United States Circuit Court is
peyond and above thé influence of
. those who do the dirty work of
the anti-mining blackmailers,
_ cranks and demagogues, and their
miserable misrepresentations and
idiotic ravings can have no influence on the outcome. __

The Extensive Operations ef
er Men from Nevada CounT. W. Sigourney is in town on
ges around Goose, Albert and
silver Lakes'in Lake county, Oregon. His partner is Crawford J.
Cox, son of Fred Cox, formerly a
resident of Grass Valley, this
county, but now living at Sacramento. These two young gentlemen have the largest and most valuable ranch in that part of the
Coast. It consists of rolling and
well watered grazing lands, furnishes first-class feed for the stock
and has numerous large buildings
onit. They own between 14,000
and 15,000 head of cattle, worth
from $19 to $22 per head, 560
horses and 300 mules. During
the coldest months of the season
the animals are wintered in a
sink about 20 miles from the Albert ranch and near Lakeview,
where they thrive splendidly:
The marketing place is Cottonwood, Shasta county, where
is always found ready sale for
the cattle which are shipped by
the purchasers to San Francisco.
In the winter months about fifteen men are employed as. drovers and in other capacities, while
the summer force consists of from
thirty to forty hands. Messrs.
Sigourney and Cox make their
headquarters at a point five miles
from Alturas, and both of them
give their personal attention to
the management'of the business.
As they are energetic, intelligent,
and devote themselves closely’ to
the affairs of the enterprise, it is
liable to prove as eminently successful in the future as it has in
the past.
Aaron Martin, another young
gentleman from Nevada City, is
prospering finely in the same section of. country. He is interested
with Mr. Jopp, a man of considerable means,in the ownership of a
large general merchandise store
at Alturas. Messrs. Jopp & Martin also own 850 acres of land 20
miles from Alturas. Their ranch
is stocked with a thousand or fif
teen hundred head of cattle and
two hundred horses. Their property is one of the most valuable of
any of its extent in northern CaliIN PAY GRAVEL.
Important Strike at the Centennial Mine. : ‘
This week the shaft in the Centennial drift claim, Washington
township, struck bedrock in the
long-sought channel at a depth of
about 250 feet, and developed a
fine body: of pay gravel. The
pumps now in use being of insufficient capacity to handle the large
quantity of waterccoming in were
removed shortly after the strike
was made, and operations will not
be resumed until Spring when
new and heavier machinery will
be put in. 3
The Centennial claim is owned
by an. incorporation, the stockholders in which principally reside at Gold Hill and Virginia
City, Nevada,..Prospecting was
commenced there in 1875 or perhaps -earlier undor the superintendence of Major Downie, and
has been prosecuted most of the
time since then. Long tunnels have
been run and shafts out down, the
expenditures probably ‘approximating’ $75,000.. The stockholders have put.up assessments after
assessment (the 22d one will be delinquent this month) with a
promptness that evidenced their
implicit faith inthe eventual discovery of arich mine. That their
persistence and nerve are now in
afair way to be liberally rewarded:is quite certain.
The finding of the main channel
and pay gravel by the Centennial
Company will put new life into
that part of the county and give
an impetus to gravel mining along
the rich and extensive channel
that traverses the Centennial and
neighboring locations.

If any lady ig unfortunate
enough to be troubled with freckles, moths, pimples or an unsightly complexion, the use of Ainaxab, the Egyptian Elixir, will make
her skin soft, clearand brilliant.
There is no skin which will not be
improved by it. Itdoes not injure the skin, but rids it of impurities andthe effects therefore are
permanent. There are many ladies in Nevada county who use
it, anyof whom will cheerfully
testify as to its merits. W. D.

is selling it at the reduced price of
