FREMONT CENTENARY
If the times were normal, California might be paying at.
tion to the Pacific Coast occurred 100 years ago. As it is, the
centenary will not pass unnoticed in the country. In Missouri,
whence the Pathfinder started out, recognition is being given
the occasion. And Washington plans some sort of fitting
memorial.
The Fremont expedition of 1843 prepared the way for)
the:winning of the west. Fremont’s report of the journey, with
its description of the territory crossed, was avidly devoured .
by people back in the States. It changed the popular conception of the Western wilderness. It fired in men the desire to
set forth toward the setting sun. It started people to thinking
about the migrations that were to reach full flood after the discovery of gold.
In later expeditions Fremont paved the way for California’s acquisition by the Union. Places innumerable have
historic associations with him and his men. He was at Sonoma, Sutter's Fort, Los Angeles, Monterey and on Gabilan
Peak. A marker on the Calaveras River north of Waterloo
calls attention to one of his camping places in San Joaquin
County. In later years when the Pathfinder and his wife, Jessie
Benton Fremont, lived at their Mariposa grant, their ‘carriage
rolling down from the hills enroute to San Francisco was a
familiar sight in Stockton.
Fremont, one of California’s first United States senators,
received his crowning honor in . 856 when given the nomination for president on the new Republican Party’s ticket. But
that high honor was almost to prove his undoing. In the bitter
campaign that followed. his name and reputation were dragged through the mud. His feats were belittled, his motives
were impunged and his patriotism was attacked. Losing the
election to Buchanan was not all. Fremont was under a cloud
for a generation. —
Even today historians differ widely in their estimates of
Fremont the man. But after the lapse of time there is little
reason to belittle his important role in California and_ the

BASTILE DAY
A prostrate and humiliated France this week greets the
anniversary of the storming of the Bastille and the release of
the prisoners of state. dawn of the French revolution and
France's great national holiday.
Soil of the homeland lies under the heel of the ruthless
Nazi tyrant, its so-called leaders bending the knee to the gauleiter of the moment, its unhappy people herded into German
armament plants to forge chains for themselves and death for
their friends.
On the soil of its colony, Algeria, the factions of General
Giraud and General De Gaulle’ wrangle nnd snipe at each
other in a duel for power that tries the patience of the British
and American liberators. Truly, the picture of France on its
anniversary day is not a happy one.
But it will not ever be thus. There is a latent spirit in the
French, the spirit of Bastille Dy itself, that cries out for freedom. Given half an opportunity; Frenchmen will assert themselves. They did so in Martinique. They will do so in France,
when the time arrives. On Bastille Day, we may sympathize
with France, and pray for the day of her complete liberation.

WHEN a street or a road is crowded, you can
see it. But you can’t see when the Long Distance
lines are crowded. ;
So the operator will tell you when the circuit
you want is extra busy. Then she will ask you
to limit your Long Distance call to not more
than 5 minutes.
That will help others to get their calls
through, too.
Of course, there won’t be congestion every
