J.-RECTOR AT ELKS I would if were on any occasion, other than this sad one, that I had been called upon to say my. few poor words of sympathy, of comfort, of praise and o fundying regret at the untoward passing of this’ life-long business associate—this gallant youth— this well beloved, who, but a few short yesterdays ago, was among us, up and doing, and who now lies voiceless in his own’ behalf, mute—forever stilled. _ How sadly would I bear witness to his engaging qualities, his ready smile his willing hands, his unflagging industry, his great noble heart, his unfailing sympathy for affliction and distress. Today, I may no longer tell him. We can only pause beside this flower strewn bier to render all too late the homage of our hearts and speak out at last the unspoken words of happy days which have passed us by. Thus, once again, it is borne in upon us how life is short and Time is fleeting— we are minded that we sieze the passing moment for acts of kindness to the living—that a single day may not prove too late and the morning find our friend departed or his lonely voyage, without the cheer“WW omessage and the tender token. Mr. a Mrs. Fred C. Worth have: entnte. . DUTCH FLAT RESIDENTS PETITION HIWAY COMISH The people of Dutch Flat and vi cinity have presented a numerously signed. petition to the State Highway Commission with regard to a rerouting of the Victory Highway from Gold Run eastward from its present route. The following is the substance of the petition: First, that the community of Dute Flat is situated upon one of the proposed routes, being the only com. munity of its size through which the . highway along either route would pass between Colfax and Truckee. That Dutch Flat is one of the historic spots of the state of California, and as such, entitled to be upon the main highway route, not only from a gentimental standpoint, but from a standpoint of tourist interest as well. That the highway route as surveyed through Dutch. Flat is. the more practical of the two routes under consideration and would serve the public. It is our understanding that it is the aim of your Honorable body to secure in so far as possible an ‘all year” highway. The-route Dutch Flat, the Bear River Canyon, Bear Valley and along Lake Spaulding would provide as nearly as_ possible such a highway, while,.on the other hand, the other — route. under consideration would be virtually impassable from the Pacific Telephone & Telegraph Company’s_ shelter house No. 1 to Crystal Lake during the winter months. By routing the new highway ‘through Dutch Flat a better gradient may be obtained, it being virtually a water grade from this point to Cisco. From a scenic standpoint the Dutch Flat route is unsurpassed in California, the proposed link passing through hitherto unopened country of indescribable beauty. Such a highway would undoubtedly serve to develop this country and would lead to the establishment of numerous summer homes, such as now border the stretch of highway from Truckee to Tahoe City. The lower altitude of this route would render» such homes available at least six weeks earlier in the spring and a similar length of time in the fall. Another. important feature that must not be overlooked in settling upon a route for the Gold Run-Cisco highway link is that the upper, or Emigrant Gap route is virtually unler the Southern Pacifie Snow:sheds. \ snowshed fire, the hazard of which ‘s particularly great in the summer vhen the traffie is at its peak, would effectively block this route. No such hazard’ exists on the Duteh Flat route, which has the addi‘ienal advantage of being cooler and, . ! because of the fact that it follows the course of Bear andYuba rivers, more free from dust. It is our understanding that ihe proposed Ukiah ; 8 4 Jeads that we ween ot his passing . ame day except Mrs. highway will enter Bear Valley through Nevada county and the merging of the two highways would eliminate\ the duplication of several miles of costly construction. We therefore urge that vour Hon, orable body will give the Dutch Flat route your careful consideration in making your final. decision, to the end that not only the best\ interests of this community, but of the entire state of California be served\ CAMPTONVILLE PERSONALS Mr. and Mrs. Bernice Shemrantind accompanied by Miss Hazel Stennis, all of San Francisco, on a_ short visit with relatives.
