PAGE FOUR — —— Just WonbdgEriIn’ UERSTE co —— I wonder at the treasures found Upon the mother lode, Where claims that never peter out Mark every. winding road. Our eyes may miss the gold concealed In gravel and in ore, But those who seek will surely find A wealth of golden lore. I wonder at the innumerable treasures sought by those who visit the little communities of the mother lode. Prospectors all, their objectives present a bewildering variety. Monitors have begun to roar again along the mother lode and mining minded men are coming up to the ghost towns of the Sierras in search of golden treasure. Many of these modern pioneers are sturdy, well trained men, who know their auriferous gravel and are capable of appraising the content of gold bearing rock with uncanny accuracy. ; If perchance they lack practical experience, and are confronted by problems for which they are not fully prepared, there is sure to be a long time resident standing by, with a whimsical grin upon his face and just the right amount of needed information. He told a press conference the possibility of sending rifles to Hire is being considered if thes Eire government gives assurances they would be used against Germany in the event of a German attack on Ireland. ; Army The War Department announced total strength of the Army as 1,441,500 officers and enlisted men, ineluding: Regular Army 505,700; National Guard, 288,800; Selectees, 594,000; Reserve Officers, 53,000. McKune was convicted of allowing a camip fire to escape and also for not having a camp fire permit and the required shovel and axe. He was fined $100 or 50 days in jail. Joseph D. Wagner was given a $50 suspended sentence. Fire Prevention Officer Rafferty investigated the cause of the fire. The investigation on the ground developed definite clues as to the cause of the fire and the responsible parties. Sacramento detectives E. A. Spraktes and H. A. Warren assisted Rafferty in locating McKune and Wagner in Sacramento Sunday evening, July 6. Supervisor Ellis states that McKune and Wagner had gone into Blue Canyon diggings on a prospecting trip.
