As always, youth will be served. speech in the House of Commons, Benjamin Disraeli, aged 33, shouted defiantly: when you will hear me!” That young man became England's greatest statesman. Years later, he wrote: “The Youth of a Nation aré the trustees of Posterity.”’— 4pletion in tthe Black Hills of South Dakota of sculpturing on a great mountain gigantic, heads of four great Americans, Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt. Those portraits, while artistically magnificant, have a historic flaw in common with famed group portaits of members of the Continental Congress and the signers of the Declaration of Independence. The flaw is that most such heroes invariably are pictured in old age or late middle age—although yeuth, daring sponsible for creating this nation and shaping its destiny. In 1776, when the Declaration of Independence was signed, Alexander Hamilton was a youth of 19. The immortal Jefferson, who write it, was only 33; The intellectual but erratic Aaron Burr was standing military officer, was 20! George Washington was comparatively an oldster—at 44! Theodore Roosevelt was a New York legislator at 23, candidate for mayor of New York at 28: Lincoln began public life in the Illinois legislature when and brilliant, was largely re 20; Henry “Lighthouse Harry’’ Lee, outMen now young will lead America on a near tomorrow. Who are they? No one knows where the lightening will strike Old Bob: LaFollette is gone—but his sons are making their marks in his home state and in congress. California has young men of promise, such as Robert Gordon Sproul. president of the University of California, who ranks as one of the youngest and ablest educational executives in the nation, and the vigorous Dick Olson, who seems the sort to want to forge ahead “on his own” and not on the momentum of being the governor's son. And New York's youngish, dynamic Prosecutor Dewey is looming as a possible candidate in next year’s presidential elecMaking his aiden ‘I sit down now, but the time will come care Mutiny On The Bounty _ Uncle Sam. The strangest, most preposterous mutiny in all history was launched last week on the biggest liner ever floated'on the industrial seas—mutiny by members of the WPA crews of the good ship Federal Bounty. Other ships have foundered in the stormy weather of late years. Buffeted vessels of private industry have gone down here and there, and their anxious crews have struggled gamely to get new jobs—berths of any sort on any ship. But the WPA ship was equipped with every safety device. the government could provide. So huge it had a crew of millions, its pay list Was guaranteed by the crews and owners of the individual _ ships of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture—who chipped im their taxes to maintain the gigantic craft. But the WPA crew struck—because a ship's plumber, receiving $84 a month for 42 hours’ labor, was asked to work 5 hours a day, six days a week! That crew's mutinous leaders struck against the most generous Captain a crew ever had— They struck against the government that built their vessel; against the law and against the real owners of the good ship Federal Bounty, the American people. And the Captain, at this writing, has sternly ordered those mutineers to report for duty, or to go ashore and look for something else, while _he puts the Bounty out of service. Before it is to late, those . . crewmen might ponder the old maximum: wrath of a patient man!""—Contributed. *‘Beware_ the wht £ 107 mun Streee Nevada County Photo Center PHONE 67.
