In this book, Dr. Deutsch shows
first, of all, what it means to lose
liberty; pointing out that in Europe
the greatest agony came not through
the loss of fortunes or throgh torture, but in the realization of people
that they were condemned without
hope to be the servants of a state for
which persecution is the highest law.
Dr. Deutsch has taken from the
writings of early Americans, Roger
Williams, James Madison, Benjamin
Franklin, George Washington, and
others, their views on personal liberty, showing they knew well what
