Although it is axiomatic that nothing is so dead as yesterday's newspaper, Amelia Earhart claims a place in the public
consciousness far more permanent than that accorded mere
run-of-the-mill front page sensations.
Truly named the first lady of the air, her fame rests on
far firmer footing than that of the transient newspaper celebrity. A brilliant linguist, speaking five languages fluently, and
an equally brilliant student of ‘experimental chemistry, she
«<
made her first solo flight after only ten hours’ instruction.
Within two years of the day she won her wings,.she had esnautigue Internationale, the first woman so honored.
ceive the Distinguished Flying Cross, to make a transcontinential non-stop flight, to fly from Hawaii to the United
States, to cross the United States in an autogiro. Within the
short space of two months, she.made the fastest trans-continential flight on record and the fastest transcontinental hop
_ by @ woman.
For these amazing accomplishments, Amelia Earhart will!
be a vivid, living memory when the stories of today’s lynch
tablished a new woman's altitude record of 14,000 feet; a year .
~Jater she received the coveted license of the Federation AeroShe .

] wonder why a childish sin
Should trail me through the years;
Provoking retrospective smiles,
But never rating tears.
I wonder how to count the loss,
How to compute the gain,
I strive to weigh the punishment,
But strive, alas, in vain.
I wonder what gave the impulse wings. Inherent sin,
wanderlust or far, sweet notes from the pipes of Pan, stealing
in through ‘an open window to bemuse and distract the mind
. of a restless child? Who knows?
. Jt was a sparkling day in early spring; the world outside
was glamorously lovely, the schoo! room was not, so, . played hookey—slipped away at noon to spend four never to be
forgotten hours wandering along the banks of Sweetland
creek, wading in the cold water, walking flumes and, all un. consciously collecting pictures to hang on Memory’s wall.
I was not punished—then; parents spoke their minds
with commendable reserve, teacher's eyes held a_ glint of
amusement as he said, “don’t let it happen again;’’ I! was
vastly relieved; just childish defection, easily forgiven, soon
to be forgotten? That's what I thought until I found that fate
had played an unkind hand.
Upon the very afternoon of my dereliction my ‘ class
mates turned a page in the old arithmetic and were initiated
into ‘the mysteries of compound interest. . missed the lesson,
lost ground, trailed the class for the remainder of the term,
for the rest of my school days—in fact from that time right
. down to the present hour, compound interest has shown me a
clean pair of heels.
The pictures still hang on Memory’s wall; vivid and
glowing as upon the day when first . made them mine; the
. creek rippling through enchanted vistas of light and shadow;
flower jeweled hillsides, the waterfall below the bridge, deep,
wooded canyons and far dim ranges of my own Sierras, the
Yuba, gleaming like a stream of molten silver through blue
and sdebtai eatast: Yes, the pictures rémain;, but, I don't. know
a-solitary thing about compound interest! To me it is as illusive aS ignis fatuus, as mysterious as the rings of Saturn, as indifferent to my needs and desires a the Great Stone Face. .
Did I lose or gain what time . was A. W. O. L. ?—Not
that it matters.
I wonder how many of us will drop dead if Franklin D.
chooses to run for a third term.
I wonder if Colonel Lindberg will return to America. to
equip his erstwhile compatriots with mechanical hearts so that
of one pump breaks down another will immediately go into
action. —A. MERRIAM CONNER.
NID TO VOTE AUG. 11
A district wide election has been,
called for August 11 for a vote on
the Modified Refunding Plan for the
N. I. D. which has been under promotion for the past year. The board
of directors at a meeting held Tuesday accepted the plan and voted to
hold the election om August 21.
The major purpose of the plan is
to reduce the’ fixed charges of the
district so, As to insure its solvency
indefinitely.
Holders of appropixmately $8,100,000 of bonds have been asked
This will make possible an immediate start for the creation of .a sinking fund. It is believed that the
Modified Plan is of equal interest to
poth the land owners and the bondholders and that all but a very small
per cent of the bonds will be deposited for the reissuance of new bonds.
Sufficient ‘of the outstanding
‘bonds have already been deposited
to insure the directors that an election to decide on the acceptance of
the Medified Refunding Plan is justified.
