BATTLE TO OPEN
WITH PINE BARK
BEETLE PEST
The fight against the pine bark
beetle in California will soon begin
in earnest, according ‘to the State
Yhamber of Commerce who was tdday advised by the U. S. Bureau of
Entomology that the $50,000 for experimental control studies, is availalble. The State Chamber has carried
on a vigorous campaign in Washington during the past six months to
secure funds for studies of contro)
methods, ,
“The bark beetle and other forest
insects have during the past five
years destroyed more valuable tim‘ber than fire and lumbering combined,”’ eording to E. W. Murphy, ;
chairman of the state chambers con=
servation committee, and actually
threatens total. destruction of the
California’s pine forests. d
John M. Miller, senior entomologist of the Bureau of Entomology and
Plant Quarantine, gives the _ state
chamiber credit for securing the
jeetie econ'trol studies. In a letter to
the State Chambe, said*
“This increase, together with the
previous increases secured, as a result of the. efforts of the California
State Chamber of Commerce, brings
the total of new funds made available for the ‘work in this region to
approximately °$50,000. It will now
be possible to initiate in the state a
program of research to improve control methods or adequate detection
surveys, and of servicé to those concerned wilth the application of the
results of this program to forest conservation in California.’
