Color. streak and powder lead grey; sometimes tarnishes blue or green. Is found rarely in this*area associated with gold bearing quartz and generally as a Secondary mineral. CHILLIAN MILL—Had a circular bed like the arastra. (See Pannings. June 14); but was much smaller and the quartz was crushed by two large stone wheels. CHINESE PUMP—A primitive apparatus much used in the early days of placer mining to drain pits. It was essentially a chain pump; a continuous belt of canvas 5 or 6 inches wide with wooden cleast at intervals made to pass through a rectangular box. At the upper end the water was delivered into. a trough. CHLORINATION—Of the chlorination process chlorine gas, whicn has a great affinity for-gold.is generated and unites with the gold forming a choloride of gold, which is then dissolved by water, and the gold precipitated by means of sulphite of iron or other agent. In 1879 the Pioneer Reduction Works, established in 1858, situated
on Grass Valley road about a mile and a quarter south of Nevada City changed from amalgamation to a chlorination process. CHUTE—A flume for sliding ore, generally between levels. The piles of dirt about the mouth of the shafts.so resembled the burrows made by coyotes that the hustling mining camp. just west of the old cemetery was called Coyoteville. For a short time its population was . about that of Nevada City with which it was later incorporated. CRADLE—A wooden apparatus for washing gold bearing gravel; a rocker, -CRIBBING—The timber lining of a drift, tunnel, shaft, winze or crosseut. A term applied to rough or light timbering as distinguished from more solid sets. CROPPING — (Out-crop.) That part of a vein which appears on the surface. CROSS COURSE—An intersecting vein. CROSS CUT—A tunnel or level driven across the course of a vein or lode forthe purpose of development, and to delimit the width of the vein, or to explore adjacent ground. CYANIDE—A compound of cyanogen with a metal.
