CHILLIAN MILL—Had a circular

smaller and the quartz was crushed
by two large stone wheels.
CHINESE PUMP—A primitive apparatus much used in the early days
of placer mining to drain pits. It
was essentially a chain pump; a continuous belt of canvas 5 or 6 inches
wide with wooden cleast at intervals made to pass through a rectangular box. At the upper end the
water was delivered into. a trough.
CHLORINATION—Of the chlorination process chlorine gas, whicn
has a great affinity for-gold.is generated and unites with the gold
forming a choloride of gold, which
is then dissolved by water, and the
gold precipitated by means of sulphite of iron or other agent.
In 1879 the Pioneer Reduction
Works, established in 1858, situated
on Grass Valley road about a
mile and a quarter south of Nevada
City changed from amalgamation to
a chlorination process.

generally between levels.
