Both caves were filled with bat guano, which acted as a perfect preservative for basketry, feathers, cloth, wooden artifacts, and other objects which ordinarily perish within a few years, according to Dr. A. L. Krober, head of the University’s. department of anthropology. While the Lovelock Cave is larger, guano hunters had seriously disturbed its contents; the Humbolt Cave was intact. a In addition to burials and-a large accumulated through the centuries, thirty one caches were discovered in perfect condition, each reprdésenting either the material treasures or the sacred paraphernalia carefully stowed away by some aborigine of long ago. Six large cases of specimens have been received at the museum of anthropology and are being unpacked. The second half of the summer’s work which also is being financed by the Blackems, will be spent in the excavation of an Indian mound in the Sacramento Valley. There has been some petty thievery at the swimming pool, nothing of much value has been taken, but the principle is the same and the result is simetimes as damaging as if real valuables had been taken.
