twenty years ago by the University
of California and the Museum of the
American Indian. Both caves were
filled with bat guano, which acted as
a perfect preservative for basketry,
feathers, cloth, wooden artifacts,
and other objects which ordinarily
perish within a few years, according
to Dr. A. L. Krober, head of the University’s. department of anthropology. While the Lovelock Cave is
larger, guano hunters had seriously
disturbed its contents; the Humbolt
Cave was intact. a
In addition to burials and-a large
accumulated through the centuries,
thirty one caches were discovered in
perfect condition, each reprdésenting
either the material treasures or the
sacred paraphernalia carefully stowed away by some aborigine of long
ago. Six large cases of specimens
have been received at the museum
of anthropology and are being unpacked.
The second half of the summer’s
work which also is being financed by
the Blackems, will be spent in the
excavation of an Indian mound in
the Sacramento Valley.
Other members of the party are
Gerald Lance, Fullerton, and -Rich
ard Beardsley, San Francisco, of the
University of California; and WilMam Wiard of Sacramento Junior
College.

Many church singers of both sexes
use a vibrato that to the trained ear
is not pleasant. Vibrato or, as some
call the effect, tremulo, sounds well
on an organ. but
the human _ voice
instrument is not
built for that and
in consequence the
effect is, to me,
most unpleasant.
There has been
some petty thievery at the swimming pool, nothing of much value
has been taken, but the principle is
the same and the result is simetimes
as damaging as if real valuables had
been taken. This is written in the
hope that all parents whose children
go to the pool will impress them with
a respect .for other. youngsters
things, my own have already been
on the carpet in this regard.

The United States’ position as re-;
gards value of our circulating med.
ium is the envy of the world. This
section and all the gold producing
territory in this country is prosperous because of the price of gold..
Many extra men.are being employed
on many small mines. They owe their
jobs to the price of gold. Many mer.
chants in this particular section are .
making money because of the ‘price
of gold. Some one may rise to re-!
mark that taxes are greater than be: .
fore the rise in the price of gold.
That is true. But there is still left .
for the. operator a larger margin
than before the rise took place.
I do not aspire to be a policeman
or a sheriff but it seems to me that .
either job carries as much responsib,
ility as any I know of. The peace officer is as a matter of fact a soldier. !
His duties carry him into adventures '
from which he may not always
emerge unscathed. He cannot aiways
take the publie into his confidence.

not usually-stay on the job very
long.
With only seven short years to go
before being eligible for the Townsend $200 per month revolving pen‘sion I should perhaps be one of th2
mest militant in it’s favor. But I am
not an advocate of the plan for the
simple reason that in my ignorance
I cannot see an honest way of administering so large an amount of
money. The army of chislers would
be augmented to unbelievable proportions.
