Cross ‘ed to far exceed that as the proper0% The Nugget fs Califorifta’s Bp VOLUME III, NUMBER 36 2 Leading Mining Weekly evada City Nugget THE GOLD CENTER NEVADA CITY, NEVADA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA, THE COUNTY SEAT PAPER, eee mae 22, 1 1929, POWER LINE WILL BRING NEW ERA OF PROSPERITY TO EAST BELT COUNTRY The new power line to be constructed southeastward from Atleghany to serve a large number of mines in the East Belt is the biggest forward looking move instituted by the Pacific Gas and Electric Company in the history of Nevada county mining. It will mean the eventual fehabilitation of numerous mining properties which have been dormant for many years. ‘The Fast Belt has wonderful production possibilities and with cheap and adequate power facilities provided, will do much toward putting-this section of California on the mining map again. With the surveys compieted, the matter of preparing estimates and procuring of rights of way will be all that remain before commencing actual construction. Construction is expected to consume not to exceed sixty days which should mean power ready early this fall. The power company will also be busy extending the line from the Wisconsin mine several miles into Downieville and open up a promising mineral territory there. Leaving Alieghany the properties Gold Canyon, German Bar, Twin Sister, Hegarty, WNational-Republic group and on to the Spanish group. Short feeder lines will be constructed te supply the Gaston Ridge and Ancho ‘groups. tion distance involved but it_ means.immense possibilities to the mining industry which has been languishing in that section for a number of years. With the upper water supply going inte other parts the Operators who have. been depending on water power to operate their plants, have found their water supply dwindling away of late years almost to the vanishing point with ihe result that mining has been but desultory. the line will of the Lreian, is not great The initial installation at the Spanish properties will run several hundred horse power and is expectty gets into tull produetion. ‘The other properties will bring the total consumption up to a considerable figure. One of the properties to be particularly benefitted will be. the Twin Sisters -property being developed by Mendocino and Sonoma county capital and Southern California interests. This mine is one of the biggest potential producers of high grade rock that the county boasts but ' has been held back fer some years by inadequate facilities. Last year water power’ was installed to operate the compressor but it proved quite unsatisfactory and the coming of electric power will mean a fuil development program instituted to bring the property onto a production basis at an early date. : The German Bar-has been operating with gas power. but has been . contemplating a much larger development with electric power available. L. L. Poates who has extensive properties adjacent to the Twin Sister is contemplating the reopening of his group as soon as power fs available. The effect of the new power line will be readily discernable at an early date in the new impetus given to gold mining in the East Belt territory. CLYDE TILFORD PASSES Clyde Tilford, well. known miner of Sierra county and an ex-service man, passed away at Alleghany last week nd the remains—were brought to the Holmes Funeral Home. His brother J. D. Tilford learned of the sad news on his recent return from an extended exploration trip into Death Valley. Clyde had’ operated around the Forest section and J. McCormack representing the Nevada County Development Association were in Sacramento last week arranging for the space to be utilized for the exhibit from this county for the coming state fair. The display will be almost entirely devoted to minerals and it is hoped that one can be arranged that will focus attention on, our wonderful resources. W. H. Griffiths will assist in the preparation of the exhibit and its management during the fair. SPECIMEN ORE IS STRUCK AT THE HOGE WORKINGS Additional important © discoveries of high grade ore in the Hoge Development Company holdings north of town in the’ prospecting work, further substantiate’ the belief of those heavily interested in the company that they have the makings of a real’ mine. General Manager Arthur W. Hoge . brought into tow . the past few days a large specimen of ore that was literally shot with the precious yellow stuff and set those who were privileged to view the find to seeing visions of a large mining camp springing up on Harmony Ridge in the near future. President Hoge reports that after a conference with C. L. Walthers, the chairman of “the board of. directors, who _ recently spent about two weeks here, and who was accompanied by two important stockholders, Dr. Styler and Mr. McKay, that an agreement was reached whereby an important program of development will be put into execution, as soon as all MT development of the: the necessary details are worked out by Messrs. Hoge and Uren. This program was left entirely in the hands of Mr. Hoge and Mr. Uren in whom they all expressed every confidence. They also stated ‘that the prospective stage of development, plainly showed to them, "that the properties of the Hoge Development Company, showed all of the necessary indications for the development of a big producer. Consequently the .three parties who were here agreed to take over a large block of treasury stock for the purpose of carrying out the plans that.were agreed upon while they were here. : They ‘own and control an immnese acreage in the graniie-slate contract belt, and have made some very important discoveries, that are; convineing evidence, for the development of one of the ‘big uines of the district. The editor of this paper has predicted success for their company, because of their large acreage in a. heavily mineralized zone, and in a virgin territory. And last but not least because the management of this company has got the reputation of honestly expending every dollar that comes in to the treasury of the company, which afterall, is one of the important factors, for the consideration of the interests. een tn No protestants were made to the board of supervisors sitting as a board of equalization ovér the assessment list of the county as prepared by County Assessor Henry C. GERMAN BAR IN TUNNEL THREE CUTS ORE SHOOT Development work in the No. 3 tunnel at the German Bar property . reached, its objective this past week at a point 595 feet from the adit and the ore shoot uncovered in tunnel No. 2 was cut into apparently. As soon as the work has progress! ed somewhat further raises will be run to No. 2 level and_ the ore blocked out ready for milling. The ore appeared in_the face of . No. 3 at about the point expected and shows up well in.values. Work will be started shortly in No. 2 tunnel and in No. 4 which is now in 635 feet. No. 2 is in 780 feet. As soon as the new’ power line from Alleghany to the Spanish property is constructed it is the intention of Thomas E. Stephens, owner of the German Bar to instal} a mill as he has. already a good tonnage of milling ore blocked out sufficient to keep a miil going for some time and with development . work progressing steadily by the mill is in it should be possible to get under good headway. When the work in No. 4 ix started pumping equipment will be installed to dewater the old winze which was sunk in early days under the rich ore shoot and from which around $50,000 was taken out at this point. The heavy flow of water drove out the early day miners. Mr. Stephens who is in personal charge of the operations was in town Saturday afternoon on his . way to Placer county for the week' end. \He reported himself as well pleased with the showing made in the property so far and expressed the belief that the new power line into the East Belt will have far! reaching consequences’ on future quartz mining industry in Nevada county.
