Printed and Editor and Publisher Associate COZY CORNER CHAT > THE PRESENT AGITATION by . the city trustees im pulting a few . teeth into the traffic. ordinance in . which quite a few of the tax payers’ . shekels have been invested, is likely . to lead to a tighteneng up of the wide license which has been given the motoring public. Chief of Police Shearer had worked out a nice system’ which was getting results through using Driver Hallett of th efire department and the city treasury. was reaping some real cash benefits. and no one was being gouged either. Someone came along however and said the fire department was getting a black eye as a result and that the driver was ex+ pected to stay at the fire house 24 hours a day on active duty. Result, the traffic inspection work ceased. . The first thing for the fire depart-! ment to consider is that the city trustees are providing the mony to pay the driver and they should have some measure of control over his: work also. In the. next place it is . illegal to call for 24 hours a day . service from any individual. The. city is not in a position to use a} full time traffic officer with the consequent expense. If such were the case there would have to be so Many arrests to keep up an appearance that the practice of pinching! -motorists On every occasion would . soon become obnoxious and Nevada . City would be getting some undesir. able advertising. There is no need of . having a special traffie officer eee . but there should be some one patrol. ling the business section and cease . this backing out of. streets into traffic to avoid going around the block, the fagrant use of the streets by; the outside trucks without regard . to the traveling public, and wronk parking. If only the streéts were} marked as they now promise to be: and then some intelligent attention given to educating the motoring public that there must be respect: for, the traffic ordinance which was en-: ‘acted in keeping with the uniform state ordinance, life and limb be safe here. Chief Shearer had the right solution of the prob:em of keeping the streets patroNed at a} minimum of expense. and it is to be hoped that the fire Cepartment . will fall in with the idea and make . t possible to keep up a semblance . of enforcing the traffic laws. The} trustees aire anxious Nevada . City. shall model with reasonable license for its’ citizens and visitors but a little backup for] those who do not desire to show. a desire to keep within decent limits. Let the trustees proceed with the marking of the parking and loading zones and then see that the motoring public shall use proper discretion when using the streets.
