The final debacle of harmful inflation became inevitable
when the OPA a war emergency institution was continued as
an artificial price depressant in the post war reconversion\era,
while the truly inflationary forces—strikes which crippled
production and unreasonable wage increases which pyramid’
ed costs—raged on unchecked. This created a menacing situation which the congress sought to ease gradualy by a law
obliging the OPA to cut its strangling red tape, strand by
strand over a period of months. That wasn't an ideal plan—
there could be no ideal, easy way out of the dilemma. But it
was the only practical way out of a position fundamentally
unsound. The veto simpiy loosed, of a sudden enormous inflationary pressure which government itself had created.
Now the people suffer from their government's shortsightedness. Some of the controls such as that on rents should
