LOS ANGELES, July 22—We ara
truly on the threshold of a new era
of limitless energy reserves, Prof. E.
O. Lawrence. cyclotron inventor and
Nobel Prize winner told a joint
meeting tonight of the American
Society of Mechanical Engineers and _
the Los Angeles Engineering Council of Founder Societies, Prof. Lawrence spoke on the occasion of the
presentation to him of the Holly
Medal an honor of the American Society awarded periodically in the
from of a gold medal for distinguished service in engineering and
science. The medal was awarded to
Prof. Lawrence in 1942 for his invention of the cyclotron and other

And just as the sun has an essentially eternal fuel supply, We can be
Sure that fissionable materials on

for all purposes for centuries if not
ages to come. This does not mean
that soon our present day by day
fuels are to be replaced for industrial revolutions are not brought
about in a day nor in a year nor even
a decade.
Prof. Lawrence praised the work
of Gen. Leslie R. Groves. in organizing finder the Manhattan district
the scientific industrial and operational efforts of the atomic bomb
production. He gaid that history will
give Gen. Groves a place as a man
who profoundly influenced the
course of human events.
Prof, Lawrence said that while
he hopes the day is near when the
possibility of war will be eliminated
through world organization but that
until that day comes it is essential
for the United States in the interest
of national security to push the development of an atomic energy industrial potential similar to the present mechanical industrial potential
which played so vital a part in the
war just ended. .
