ee LW > a >? » Mary’s river and turn back its pages Monday, July 23, 1934 THE NEVADA CITY NUGGET PAGE SEVEN y British Military Party Felt Depression of 1815 If we think depressions are 1930 upstarts, we heed only to take a trip to Drummond island in the St. of history to learn that more than 100 years ago a colonel in the Britthe army, an enthusiastic boomtide builder, brought about a few hardships by his dream of cornering Great Lakes’ trade, Jack Van Coevering writes, in the Detroit Free Press. The facts concerning this episode were dug up by B. Frank Emery, sec‘etary of the Old Forts and Historic Memorial association, and had it not been for him, this-little story would remain neglected and almost forgot: ten with the island itself. Away back in 1815, the year after Great Britain and Uncle Sam had made. peace, Lieutenant Colonel McDonall, commander of the British fort at Mackinac island, received the news that Mackinac had gone to the Yankees under the treaty. He had to find a new fort for his country, and having his mind seton bigger and better strongholds, he ferried to Drummond island, which commanded the traffic ‘of the lakes. Here he started his building operations, de. i es the fact that the British exzhequer sent no cash for the purpose. 3y the time the second winter came, things began to slip. Perhaps credit became tight. Certainly fresh meat and vegetables, lime juice, and even vinegar ran out altogether. The men contracted scurvy, for they were subsisting wholly on salt provisions. Surgeon Mitchell tells that the meats had become unwholesome, and by the latter part of June, 14 men had died. John J. Bigsby, who visited the fort in 1826, indicates that the depression was beginning to lift, for he writes of the following menu: “A small square lump of highly salted beef, a bowl of stewed pudding and two dishes of potatoes were both dinner and dessert. I was astonished. This was followed by poor Spanish wine. It appeared that contrary winds had retarded their supplies. Such is military life on a detached service.” If Mr. Bigsby is to be‘believed, the depression lifted completely when the birds returned in spring. Perhaps with a bit of overenthusiasm, he says: “Pigeons and ducks at certain seasons were so plentiful that it is said, but I do sot vouch for the fact, that one had only to fire up the chimney and a couple of ducks would fall into the pot.” Such is the story of Colonel McDonall, Today one may stand on the spot he selected, 100 feet above the water, from which his guns were to sweep the channels of commerce: When the shadows of evening fall, one sees the lights of five beacons of peace ‘shine across the waters—the lighthouses of our own government service. Marvel of the Rockies, _as Geologists See ‘It Following two years of study in the field, geologists of Northwestern university have been able to determine .the sequence of events that brought aboutthe formation ofthe Rocky mountains, Profs. J. T. Stark and C, H. Behre conducted the survey. “Before the mountains began to form into their present shape,” said Behre, ‘‘there was a flat area of sea bottom, into which the gravel and sand from nearby higher country was being poured. “At the end of that time, called the Age of Reptiles, a pressure caused by the earth contracting was exerted along the sides of the area. Hot molten lava from inside the earth was foreed in between layers of rock and the surface bulged upward into the beginning of the mountain chain. “Pinally, as the side pressure became too great, the rocks were folded and broken. The cracks ran down toward the center of the earth. These were huge north-south cracks, inclined downward toward the east, and’ the rocks of the eastern side moved upward with respect to those on the west.” The geologist then told how great molten masses from inside the earth forced their way outward. long these cracks, His Quality “When a man is asleep he’s a mere vegetable,” says a scientific writer. He is, however, not edible—only audible-——Boston Transcript. ‘Simole Ways by Which Indians “Blazed” Trail American Indians have been noted for the uncanny skill with which they readily found their way through “unbroken forests. This mysterious ability was a marvel to the first settlers from Europe. ‘These pioneers, however, were not long in learning many of the secrets of the red men. Today there are still to be seen evidences that reveal the secret of the American Indian’s ability to find his way through unbroken ‘forests without getting lost and leaving behind him a trail that others, skilled in woodscraft, could easily follow. These signs can be seen in strangely deformed trees, one of which, a curiously twisted oak still standing in Winnetka, Ill., is a living memorial to the colorful days when American Indians, pressed westward by the white men as they settled the east, pushed their way through unbroken forests to new lands far in the interior. The Illinois tree is one that was caused to grow in its deformed shape, as one of thousands of markers that indicated the overland trail that led northward along the shores of the Great Lakes, and extended far into Canada.—Cleveland Plain Dealer. GREAT FACTORS IN MAN’S STORY . The region around the North sea has the world’s best climate for human health and activity, according to Dr. Ellsworth Huntington, research associate in geography at Yale university. He gives the next best rating to the northeastern United States, particularly that part on the coast, to the Pacific coast around Puget sound and in a very narrow coastal strip southward, and, to New Zealand. “The best condition for man.” Doc. tor Huntington says, “is summer weather with an average day and night temperature of about 64 degrees, which means up to 70 or more by day. This is the best temperature for physical health. Although we are unconscious of it, the birthrate shows that reproduction takes place more rapidly at this temperature than at any other. “Among people who live as we do, mental activity is greatest when the outdoor temperature averages much lower. Even though we work indoors, the outdoor temperature affects us so that we work best in weather averaging about 38 degrees, that is, when there are mild frosts at night. Doctor Huntington points out that temperature is not the only factor in producing the best ¢élimate. “We need plenty of atmospheric humidity except at high temperatures.” he continues. Doctor Huntington believes that climate plays a major role in the history of mankind. “Other things being equal,” he says, “each living thing does best in its own optimum climate. Even the germs of fevers follow this rule.” . He believes that the optimum in climate varies only a little for various groups of-people,-and that—“because of all this, the distribution of civilization throughout the world is almost identical with that of what we may call climatic efficiency. “Maps of health, automobiles, education and many other activities point to this conclusion,” he continues, “for they all show the climatic pattern. A country like Russia, in spite of all the recent changes, still stands where one would expect on the basis of climate.”—David Dietz, Scripps-Howard Science Editor, in the New York World-Telegram.
