Anthropology Dr. Leigh . ancient decaymore prevalent among people of the upper classes than among the peasants who lived on simple, course foods. The chief cause of dental diseases appeared to be-attrition or grinding away of the enamel by gritty material in the food. Such wearing away of the teeth is also met with among American Indians due: to their practices. of ' grinding creals in stone moatars or leaching acorn meal in sand. ' In none of the skulls examined was Dr. Leigh able to find evidence that the Egyptians practiced dental . surgery, On the whole their teeth remained sound until about widdleage, and no efforts, apparently, , were made to save them when they did start to go. The skeleton material in —the University Museum was gathered [ during the years 1899-1905 by. the:! expedition sent out by the late Mrs. ‘toad as in modern ; ed teeth ‘were that in America, direction of George A.
