An : Ra of water fees aon @rawings by seventeen California and Nevada artists of the WPA Federa] Art Project is being shown in the Bret Harte Inn at Grass Valley from July 19-to August 19, aecording to Mrs. Beatrice Judd Ryan, State Supervisor of Exhibitions for the Project. Outstanding among the drawings to be exhibited are the chalk drawfmgs by Robert Cole Caples of Nevada. The five drawings included in this exhibition show Mr. Caples’ individual approach to art. This artist ‘very much interested in biblical subject matter, and‘has just executed a large decorati on in pastel for the University™ ‘of Nevada—“Last Supper’’. The Madonnd in this exhibit illustrates his handling of this type ' of material: Quite opposite in feelings are’his four other drawings which show the rugged quality of western life in Nevada where Mr. Caples lives. Of special interest at this time are Otis Oldfield. Mr. Oldfield has also Made a series of the bridge in lithography. Marian Simpson, ‘who has just completed a decoration in _ inlaid marble for the new Alameda county court house in Oakland, in a medium called “Opus Sectile,’’ is exhibiting one interesting drawing of ‘Seal Rocks.’’ The éollection of water colors are by artists from Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, San Francisco and the bay area. ~ : ‘Those by George Post, ‘‘Old Ranch at Lake Topaz,’’ and ‘Ranch San artist's work. which has a flowing fascile quality. In contrast to. ‘these are being shown abstractions by Ben Berlin of Los Angeles and Ardre Rexroth of San Francisco. Among the strongest water colors of the exhibition which are in color and design, are the ‘Portsmouth Square” ‘and ‘‘Street Scne” by Herman Volz. : DANGEROUS AGE, HIGH SCHOOL AGE LOS ANGELES, July 22. — The “dangerous age’ today is the high school age, according to Dr. Herbert J. Stack, eduational director of the National Casualty and Safety Underyriters of New York City, who recently addressed a Street and Highway Safety conference at the University of California here. “Statistically, the peak of auto’ accidents occurs in the high school period. The same is true with regard to other accidents such as firearms, recreational and drowning. This is undoubtedly because it is during this period that so many are learning to drive, to shoot, to. play difficult games, to swim. Because this is true it is actually necessary that Xchools attempt to do’all they can to prevent actidents of’ all kinds. Because traffic accidents are on a dangerous increase it is doubly imperative that some program of traffic education be adopted by schools. There is no use educating youngsters in the three ‘R's’ and then sending them out to die in traffic,” said Dr. Stack. ” Attended by U. C. L. A. summer session students, city and state traffic officers and educators, the U. C. . A. conference included a general session, round table discussions, a symposium and a dinner gathering at which Vierling Kersey, superintendent of Los Angeles City schools and Arthur Erb, of the Beverly Hills traffic commission, were speakers.
