Printed and Published "at Nevada City. H. M. LEBTE Edétor and Publisher Published Semi-Weekly, Monday and Friday at. Nevada City, California, and entered as _ mail matter of the second class in the postoffice at Nevada City, under Act of Congress, March 3, > 1879. so eaterfe ote alesfeate i, S ony Mo ats ate ate aes ale ate: RATES SUBSCRIPTION One year (In Advance) R N a i) 284 34, feel * 3 e he BEST THAT MERRIAM RECALL MOVE a DIE NATURAL DEATH Little has been heard, recently, of the movement started in Southern California to muss up the election this year by thrusting into it a vote for the recall of Governor Merriam; but at last accounts nothing stood in the way of getting the petition on the ballot except the difficulty in raising the money to do it. The tradition is that signatures can be got to any petition to do anything at ten cents a name. All that seemed Jacking in this case’ was.the necessary multiple often cents. Let it be hoped that either lack of money or the reluctance of people to sign will keep this particular petition from the ballot. One does not have to be an admirer of ‘Governor Merriam to realize how easily the state might jump from: the faults for which he has been criticised to the dangers of some resolute radical or faddist. Or, even if the recall should fail, or should result in the election of an entirely acceptable opposing candidate, the confusion imported into a campaign that needs to be unconfused would be.in itself a major evil. Governor Merriam was elected after a campaign in which there were no illusions. Both his strong and his weak points were fully realized. They are no different now. There is no reason for recalling him now that would not have been an equally persuasive motive for defeating him. then. The people very properly decided, then, that on the whole case Mr. Merriam should be elected. On the whole case, Mr. Merriam should now be retained. And, on an even stronger case, an election which has issues which must be decided now should not be confused by raising others which do not need to be decided now. Let them be raised, if at all, in their due and proper time—which will be at the regular state election, two: years from now.—San Francisco Chronicle. Whitmore, gave a resume, of the divisions into which the tax fund has been eut, showing that only a half cent of the four cent gas tax is available for road construction of reconstruction of roads. Boucher talked of the many road tours which he as manager of the-State Chamber is making and the alleged gzood these trips are doing in acquainting the state road officials with the desires of the people. Judge Tuttle assured Sierra county people that.the Nevada City Chamber of Commerce was 100 per cent behind them in their efforts to get money appropriated for making the Downieville highway a safe road, and proposed that when the next. meeting of the state highway com-'! mission takes place a large delega. tion from both counties present their case to the commission. itself. . .
