State Consumes Billion Gallons Of Gas In 6 Months SACRAMENTO, Jaly 24.—An alltime reco“d was established by motorists in California during the first six months of 1941 when they consumed more than one billion gallons of gaSoline. Actually, the gallonage for the first half of the current year has amounted to 1,007,531,896, against which the board assessed a total tax of $30,225,956.97. Indicative-of the increase in gasoline consumtion, the tax amounted to an average of more than $5,000,000 a month. Lend-Lease Aid President Roosevelt sent WLéndLease Administrator Hopkins to Lon-don for a new survey of British needs, and assigned two army generals to speed the flow of munitions and food to Britain. The Surplus ‘Marketing Administration purchased * 30,000,000 pounds of tobacco, 2,544,000 bushels of corn and 75,000 bales of cotton for shipment abroad under the Lend-Lease program. Ships The Maritime Commission said expansion of the merchant ship-buildgress would provide 566 new ships — by the end of 1943. Althoygh only one of the: 312. emergency cargo ships was scheduled. for delivery: this year, at least 10 will be-in operatton ‘by December’31, the eammission said. The fastest ship ‘construction during the last war was seven months and 24 days, the commission said, to 4 1-2 to:5 months, with two ships completed every day in 1943.
