Jusrr WONDER IN
1 wonder about candidates,
For every where . go,
I find them standing fore and aft :
Or rushing to and fro; .
.
And when in accents firm and strong,
They tell me black is white,
. I never, never contradict—
Who knows, they may be right.
I wonder at the ways of the candidate with the voting public and at the peculiar reactions of those who seriously consider candidacies. .
It is rather confusing to reflect that one mere man may .
win the unequivocal approbation, confidence and fealty of cer.
tain citizen groups and at the same time excite the rabid disfavor and animosity of others; but this moving spectacle is as
old as human history and very often intelligence has nothing
to do with the case.
How do we decide which candidate to support? Some of
us select the man who, in our opinion, is best equipped to perform the services demanded by his office; some of us scan the
records, still others steal away to a secluded spot and do a bit
of unbiased thinking; but the great majority of, us simply
stamp the old party ballot and let the votes fall where they will.
I wonder if many American men and women vote as they.
do, just because they were born into democratic or republican
families and in early life learned to think, talk and believe as
father did. However, so long as republicans believe in democratic institutions and democrats believe in a republican form
of government, neither can go far astray. The main thing is to
safe-guard our political thinking from the miasma of foreign

be no good I'll never say a mean word about him, I'll just berate

people.
I wonder if you ever assume a lugubrious expression and
croon the plaintive and prophetic words of a song entitled,
“When I Grow Too Old to Dream; You*do? Then stop it.
That musical freak is depressing, moreover, it is self contradictory and illogical to the point of absurdity; anaylze its peculiar content and you'll agree. Try to imagine a person growing
too old to dream and yet treasuring in his heart the very stuff
of which dreams are made, and you'll be visualizing a physical and mental impossibility. When you are too old to dream,
you will be as senile as an Egyptian mummy and your heart
will be no fit container for memeory, love or any other human
emotion. No matter what the toll of years, keep right on dreaming; many an oldster has dreamed greatly and made his dream
come true. Discard the lyrical nonsense of ““When I Grow Too
Old to Dream,’’ smile and sing a song of courage.
I wonder at the records made by our modern clipper ships
session a diary written by a twenty year old lad who rounded
the Horn during gold rush days. He sailed in the clipper ship,
Leopard, which left Boston in December 1849 and docked in
San Francisco six months later. In one entry . find these words:
