1936 to
The four Camp Fire Girl groups
vacationing in their lodges on Lake
Vera north of Nevada City closed a
most successful season iast Saturday. The last groups were brought
to the narrow gauge depot Sunday
and left at 2:30 in the afternoon. In
the more than 1,200 girls at the four
camps only one girl was injured during the season. She was thrown from
a saddle horse. there has been no
iliness amongst the large group and
it is considered a most successful
year.
The Camp Fire Girls had a busy
season taking up a new study this
year, weaving, under a new instructor. The girls working on six looms
made many beautiful and _ artistic
articles. Other camp activities consisted of bird study, horse back riding, archery, basket ‘weaving and
pottery work.
Through the invitation of Miss
Hadys Bennyhoff, under Miss Gladys
Snyder, Reno, Nevada, ‘Camp — Fire
Girls were invited to vacation at
A group of the girls arrived Sunday.
The Reno girls had been vacationing
at Lake Tahoe but nights are very
ecotd there for camp activities.
The Camp Fire Girls visits and vacations on Lake Vera bring many
people from all over California and
particularly the bay region to Nevada
City. and county during their stay at
camp. It is felt that the visiting
group from Reno will also bring
many western Nevada state people
to our city.)

BEFRIENDED MAN
CHARGED WITH
RAPE ATTEMPT
Russell Fleury,’ a miner of Gvass
Valley! is in the county jail, under
a charge of battery and assault
which may be raised to one of attempted rape. The complaining witness is S, H. Bennett, husband of
the woman, whom it is alleged Fleury assaulted Saturday afternoon,
when hhe drove her away from Nevada City toward Lake Vera. Bennett heads the orchestra employed
at the Gold Nugget Inn.
According to the: husband's story,
related to Chief Garfield Robson,
Fleudy a patron of the Gold Nugget .
Inn, had come to their house in a!
jartially intoxicated condition ‘for al
cold shower to reduce the effect of .
too much liquor. After the shower he}
had asked for something to eat and;
Mr. Bennett asked his wife to ac-,
company Fleury down town for food:
and asked her to bring him, her hus.
band,.a sandwich. The two ate at a .
restaurant but imstead of. driving
Mrs. Bennett home, as she requested
Wleury drove her out the Lake Vera
road.In the car hegsuddenly attacked her according to Mr. Bennett’s
complain, tore her clothes, batttered
with his fists, and blacked one
of. her eyes.
i
Mrs B.ennet screamed for help and .
continued to. scream while her assailant beat her. Her screaming annoyed him and he finally climbed out
of the car, threatening to drag her
out, according to. Bennett’s statement, and declaring he know of a
way to stop her screaming. In climbjing out of the. car, he sprained his
ankle and cursing with .pain, he
turned the car around and drove
Mirs. Bennett back to town.
Under Sheriff Larsen and Police;
Chief Robson arrested him at his
home in Grass Valley before he was
out of bed yesterday morning.

SEASON OPENS
Fish planting started in the Nevada county area last week with
five men established in the camp on
Bear river on Fuller road in Bear
Valley. east of Nevada City. Three
large tanks four feet wide, sixteen
feet long and three feet deep, each
hold a truck tank of fingerling trout.
The bay trout are ‘being brought
down by tank truck from the Mt.
Shasta hatchery. :
Fish were taken from the plant
and placed in South Fork of the
Yuba river above Washington, at
Langs Crossing on the same river,
Donner Lake, Donner Creek and in
Truckee river.
It is expected the men will be at
camp about two months or until the
work is completéd. Captain A. H.
‘Willard, of the fish and -game—commission, stated this method of hand‘ling baby trout is a wonderful improvement over the old system. The
plant is arranged on the Bear river
so that fresh water is in the tanks at
all times. The fish are given a chanée
to rest and cen be moved in large or
small quantities as desired. The experienced man in charge of the tanks
and feeds the trout if they are held
in the tanks over a certain period of
time.
