This seine: highway, °°
the deep gorge of the Feather river,
is to be added to the state highway :
system on August 14, when it will .
be officially dedicated and opened .
to traffic, according to the touring .
bureau of the California State Automobile Association.
BRiasting much of the roadway out .
of solid granite canyon walls, state
highway engineers have pushed con-. !
struction since 1928. The 78 mile ,
road connects Oroville and Quincy, .
county seats of Butte and Plumas .
counties and is part of the interstate
route connecting with U. S. 49 at .
Reno. A $7,000,000 project, the high.
Way assures an ali) year passage,
across a wooded mountainous country. It is the lowest altitude route ;
over the northern California range,
at no point exceeding 4,500 feet in
elevation.
Following the’ winding Feather .
river, the highway shares the steep .
canyon with the Western Pacific
railroad. The almost perpendicular
walls necessitated building the highway on the opposite side of the gorge
from the railroad. Each time the
the railroad crosses the river,
