TUNNEL THREE
AT TWIN SISTER
NOW IN 965 FEET
With the big tunnel advanced to
a point. 965 feet from the adit on
Saturday, the long quest of the
Twin Sisters management to get under the rich ore shoots uncovered
on the upper.levels is nearly ended.
Survey maps: indicate that the ledge
will be reached at a depth of 1040
feet and it is a safe estimate that
from 1040 to 1100 feet will reach
the desired objective.
President Ray O. Foster of
Ukiah was in The Nugget office
Saturday afternoon, with a sack of
fine looking specimens which are
coming from the tunnel operations
and indicate the presence of ledge
matter as the face of the tunnel is
heavily mineralized. . The work of
driving the tunnel is progressing in
good shape and it is expected that
the next few weeks will see the
work completed. As soon as the
cbjective is reached and raises run
to connect with the upper workings
the company plans on installing a
five stamp mill as a large tonnage
of ore has been blocked out ready
for extraction. A millsite has been
graded at the tunnel auit.
With the water supply which has
been used for power, running short,
the diesel. gas engine at the mill
has been rigged up and while not
powerful enough to run the compressor at capacity, yet furnishes power enough to operate the drills one
shift. With the new power line installed, the Pacific Gas figures on
furnishing power not later’ than
October lst next which will fit in
nicely with the plans of the Twin
Sister company for large time operations.
The Twin Sister is one of the
most promising of the newer properties being developed in this section. Ore running up as high as
$40,000 a ton has been opened up
in the upper workings and is heavy
in arsenical sulphides. The mine
is on the rich Plumbago vein system which carries southward from
the fabulously rich. Alleghany ore
bodies.
WESTERN MERGER SINKS
SHAFT JACKSON VEIN
ory
A -new two compartment shaft
is being sunk on the Jackson vein
py the Western Merger Mines at
their property north of town. .Excellent progress is being made and
the shaft had attained a depth of
70 feet on Saturday. Work was
only started this month and in that
time an air hoist has been installed and a fan for ventilation. The
shaft is of sufficient size and piteh
to warrant its being sunk to great
depth if conditlons warrant.

@ SIM JORDAN IS VISITOR
Sim C. Jordan who worked in the
mines here a number of years ago
was a visitor, last week and renewing old ‘acquaintanceships. He
worked in the hydraulic mines and
around here with Hi Shearer, who
reealled old ‘times with a great
of glee. Sim lost an arm as
well as did his brother while they
were celebrating Lincoln’s election
with a canon in 1865.
Misses Nadine and Earline Sutton
are spending a few weeks visiting
relatives in the bay region. ‘
Mrs. W. C. Bennetts and _ little
daughter of Boca visited in Nevada

Congressman H. L. Engilebright
went to Sacramento Friday on busi-. the working properties which are
ness. Harry is: contemplating a
swing around his district commencing this week, to keep in intimate
touch with the needs of the district.
MINING LOCATIONS ARE
PLACED COUNTY RECORD
The following ‘mining locations
were filed for record the past week:
Bessie M. quartz in Meadow Lake
Mining District by Norman E.

Frieda A. quartz in Meadow
Lake Mining District by Louis Frey.
Jimmy B. quartz in Snew Point

SIERRA CITY IS
ON THE VERGE
OF MINE BOOM
SIERRA CITY, July 27,—This
district is apparently
of a large mining revival with the
coming of capitalists. The purchase
of the Monarch and Primrose properties by the Burkhard interets betokens interseing developments and
with other properties being experted, Sierra City looks to be getting on the mining map again.
The purchase of the Monarch
properties from Jack Lee is one of
the bigest deals put over in a number of years. The buyers are the J.
F. Burkhard interests of Los Angeles and are reported to have unlimited financial backing which is
essentially necessary in modern day
mining. The Burkhard intreetss the
past week have also purchased the
Primrose property which adjoins tle
Monarch. The surface plant at the
Monarch is being given a thorough
overhauling preparatory to engaginy
in extensive development work.
Two shifts are to be put at work
opening up the three levels on this
property and blocking out ore ready for milling. T. W. Callender
who was connected with the Sacred
Mount’ property is now with. the
new interests.
The Shamrock Gold Mining Company has taken over four patented
son ranch. William Kendall of San
Francisco representing the Shamrock
interests handled the « negotiations
with H. L. Valkenburgh and Jor
Farrell, th eowners. The property is
equipped with a five stamp mill.
It. has been idle for a number of
years and not a great deal of development work has’ been done but
preparations are being made for
considerable underground work.
The Wilson hydraulic mine adjacent to the highway between Downieville and Sierra City has been
taken over by Lewis I. Buck of Los
Angeles who proposes to commence
operations at an early date using
one monitor at the outset. Mining
at this property was stopt som¢«
years ago by. th ecounty authorities
due to danger of the highway -going out but with the new route
going though makes it possible to
open up the property again. Clamshell buckets will be used for
handling the boulders.
A great deal of interest is being
taken in the suits being heard in
superior court in which A. E. and
J. O. Hayes, owners of ihe Sierra
Buttes properties are suing F. M.
Doak of the Young Amcrieca mine
for use of water from the upper
Sardine lake. ‘Fhe Hayes brothers
seek to enjoin Doak. from taking
th ewater from the upper lake.
FOREST HILL MINES
NOW BEING OPENED:
FOREST HILL, July 27, (Special
to The Nugget)— A good many of
the old mines are starting to work
again in this section. The increase
in taxes have stirred up the nonresident owners. The local raines are
good potential producers and most
of the owners did not need the
money, holding the land as an estate. Taxing the non-productive, idle
properties might be a good way of
creating activity instead of hitting
on the verge}
pouring out their
marts of trade.

ORDERS POURING IN
FOR SPECIAL EDITION
The Nugget outgoing mail the
past week has been heavy on account of an tnflux of orders for the
Special Mining Number which have
been sent to all parts of the United States. Issued in May the edition has seen a large run and has
enjoyed a large measure of popularity for a first effort. Material is
already being assembled for the edition for next spring which is due
to make its appearance on April

YREKA MINE MEETING
SET FOR AUGUST 24
The coming meeting of the
Northern California Mining Association to be held.in Yreka on Saturday, August 24th, promises to be of
unusual interest, in that the proposed state mining association is to
be actively started in its preliminary formation. The recent meeting
at Weaverville went strongly on
record as being in favor of the
state wide body and with the impetus so far attained it is thought
likely that this fall will see the
new organization actively functioning.
Lew Carrigan, secretary of the
mining association addressed the
meeting of the Secretarial Association of the Sacraménto Valley recently held at Sacramento and
stressed the. plan of having various
chambers of commerce in the mining districts organizing mining de
partments. Pesident Gronwoldt of
Redding will preside at the Yreka
meeting.
The preliminary work so far dune
by ht. L. Kimmel, secretary of the
miniog department of the Sacramento Chamber of Commerce, has been
very effective in awakening interest
in a state wide organization which
can present a strong front in legislative matters as well as other mat. ters of interest to the mining indusFOREST IS LOOKING FOR
MUCH MINING ACTIVITY
FOREST, July 27,—Several mining deals being consummated here
will probably mean considerable ac
tivity the next few mouths. With
the operations at the Bald Moun
tain and South Fork properties already under way, the sale. of the
Lucky Dog and Mammoth Spring:
groups, and reported finding of i
new strike at th eNorth Fork, this
section fs perking up its ears in anticipation.
The Globe Mining Exploration
Company of Los Angeles has bonded the Lucky Dog property whielis said to carry much pay gravel
The mine has been closed down fo:
a number of years due to adjoining iaterests..The property consists of 158 acres. A 1700 foot tunnel was run into the mountain. The
property is well equipped for commencing operations.
The Mammoth Springs property
several miles east of Forest has
been bonde by eastern’ capitalists
who have started development work.
F. W. Kubfeld is superintendent in
charge of operations.
Work is progressing steadily at
the Brush Cresk property under
bond to the Kate Hardy interests.
A bnew compressor of much greuter
capacity is being installed. Work
was temporarily held up recently
due to breakdown of the rock breaker. The ore going through the mill
is holding up well in values.
