SPECIAL PLANS FOR
HANDLING TRAFFIC
Acting to ‘curb the annual slaughter of innocent people, officials of
the California Highway Patrol; announced today special plans for
handling the heavy traffic over the
holiday week-end of Saturday and
Sunday July 4th and 6th.
All available patrolmen and inspectors will be ordered out Sel
day and night duty, since, in addi-}
tion to the holiday traffic, three
large automobile caravans will pass
through the state.
Commenting upon the problem, BH
Raymond Cato, Superintendent of
the Patrol said, ‘‘There are approximately 74,000 miles of paved and
unpaved highways to be patrolled in
whole or in part by some 400 patrolmen. To prevent aecidents on
these roads will require the cooperation of every motorist.
“Our statistics indicate that moat
accidents result from a few definite
eauses that are within the power of
all drivers to control. One of the
most important of these is ‘speeding’. Thse motorists who insist upon
driving at reckless and excessive
speeds will be arrested.”
The following ten “don’ts’® have

Big Dailies Say “Mine Gold’’
to observe stop
Two leading dailies of the Pacific
—the Spokane Chronicle and the Seattle Star—published editorials this
month, which practica}ly advised
their readers to finance legitimate
gold-miniag enterprises. Both papers
drew the line sharply between purchases of treasury stock and speculations in issued shares.
The Chronicle remarked that gold
discoveries have been the forerunners
of civilization throughout the world.
“Gold,” it added, “is about the only}
thing today for which there is an
unlimited demand.”’
The Star warned.its readers to
beware of stock manipujations engineered from Wall Street. Mining
it said, is mecessary to the progress of
the West, but speculation ia’ not.
