Ee SE ARMY WILL GIVE SUPPORT TO AIRCRAFT WARNING OBSER VERS Each Chief Observer of ground ob. servation posts of the Aircraft Warn‘ing Service received a letter from Brigadier General W. E. Pepner com. manding the IV Fighter Command, explaining the plans for additional army support to ground observation . posts. “The Fighter Command,” General . Kepner said, “is now in a position . to provide centralized and controlled . transportation for ground observers from their homes to the observation Dost and return where commercial transportation is not available and where the distance to be traveled requires some form of transportation. WARREN WINS ROTIND ONE IN GOVERNOR BOUT By CLEM WHITAKER The gubernatorial battle has reached the slugging stage—and Attorney General Earl Warren, with his blasting attack on Governor Olson’s spending proclivitiés, has won Round One, according to the exPerts at ringside. Mr. Warren, non-partisan — challenger for the gubernatorial title, flattened the Olson claims to having; built up a state treasury surplus in his first major attack of the campaign and left the governor’s crown badly askew. (Charged Mr. Warren: “California has achieved a measure of solvency in state government, despite Governor Olson, not because of him, and the credit belongs to the members of the legislature who refused to approve his exorbitant demands for appropriations. “Let’s get the record straight. The Olson administration has been guilty of the most profligate waste and misuse of public funds in-the state’s history. If Governor Olson had had his way, there would be no surplus in the state treasury, instead there would be a staggering deficit and the people of California would be carrying much heavier tax. load than is now imposed upon them.’’ Then, giving credit where credit is due, Attorney General Warren asserted: “The credit for the -present surplus belongs to the courageous members of the state legislature, both Democrats and Republicans, who fought Governor Olson to a standstill, despite every conceivaible type of political pressure, and who reduced his prodigal demands for funds by more than $125,000,000. It was these same splendid legislators who __ defeated Governor Olson’s. demands for more than $75,000,000 in new taxes. And it is these same legislators mwhom Governor Olson is now trying desperately-te—‘purge’*: ? Mr. Warren’s statement is of more than passing significance. It means Being ALPHA STORES, Ltd. There devolves upon these communities, therefore, the responsibility to assist the ground observation posts and where a community ! or county is no able to do this the State Council of Defense has indicated its willingness to assist them. General Kepner said, “in providing for the more urgent requirements pertaining to maintenace of the ground observation corps it will be essential that this command have direct control of the corps.” This is understood to mean that the army will exercise direct supervision over the corps through civilian supervisors. ‘appointed by the command in each county and in districts within a county. The county director will remain in charge of the posts in his county. The state directors in each one of the three states on the Pacific Coast will serve as liaison officers with the IV Fighter Command. General Kepner indicated his command was deeply indebted to the state and county representatives for the assistance they had given the command since Pearl Harbor. He al= so expressed thanks to all observers and chief observers for their loyalty and devotion to the ground observation corps. Without these patriotic citizens, who serve with little recognition from the community at large, it would not now be. possible for the IV Fighter Command to perform its mission of defending the Pacific (Coast from enemy attack by air. .
