KANSAS IS HARD HIT, NEVADA CITY VISITOR FINDS Mrs. Leslie Land and niece, Rachel Horner,’ who have spent about six weeks visiting in the east returned home Thursday evening. Mrs. Land has not visited her home district for several years and called on her mother, sister and a brother in Ohio and other relatives in West Virginia and PennsylVania. Mrs. Land and niece left West Virginia. at 3 o’clock p. m. Monday and arrived in Colfax at 5:30 Thursday evening. They changed busses five times in the 3000 mile trip: They found conditions particularly bad in Kansas. Going east, corn in Kansas was nearly waist high and green while coming, back a six weeks drought had dried it powder dry. Two hard fain and hail storms were too late to help the crops. The district has had three or four years of such hard luck. ' At Wheeling, West Virginia, the steel and iron mills are almost closed down and thousands of people have moved away. New mills in Pennsylvania operated by electricity are turning out thousands of orders per day. Mrs. Land visited St. Mary’s, West Virginia, her birthplace and found it to be almost a deserted city. She found a fairly thrifty condition in Ohio, Indiana and Illinois but in many sections people are wondering what they will do to live. Mrs, Land suggested if canals were built to bring water from some of the large rivers to the fertile land in these States many more people could help themselves in raising corn, other Wgrain and livestock instead of importing it. — daughter, Barbara, of Los Angeles Hotel in Nevada City, Vaiting Georg Mr. and Mrs. R, A.
