FRENCH CORRAL, July 7, (Special to The Nugget)—-Well, some of
aus haven't yet gotten over the warmth of June’s farewell. With the 100°
mark for nearly a week, those who
ean not stand hot weather, went
through some misery. But July has
arrived with a delightful change of
temperature and some of us think
we shall recover ‘sufficiently to enjoy the glorious 4th.
Well, it is only one day away now
—this -wonderful ‘‘come back” we

and also the 49er festivities that will

hearts just thrill with ‘enthusiasm
and we are looking forward to the
most wonderful 4th ofall the years.

Thursday.
W. P. Clerkin and sister, Miss Millie, came down from their home near
Pike City Thursday and visited with
friends in French Corral. From San
Juan they were accompanied by Mrs
¥ sMfeCullough. Their French Corral

Our sheriff, George Carter was
making friendly calls “Wednesday.

E. J. N. Ott tasted the fountain of
youth during the Fourth of July
Celebration and when he shaved off
his ’49 whiskers ordered a clean
shave, He has worn whiskers for 40
years and when he saw how dapper
he looked he spruced u pin a new
suit and a new straw hat. The results
were startling. Even his-.wife failed
to recognize him. E. J. N. is a familiar figure on the streets but his
townsmen did not know the dapper
young man who appeared on the
streets. The only thing about his
appearance than remains unchanged is his genial smile.

DOWNIEVILLE ITEMS

Miss Carmen T. Veck, daughter of
County Treasurer’ Mrs. M. E. Lambert, and Sierra county, was married
to Walter Denton on Sunday, the
wedding taking place in Los Angeles.
The bride was born in Fresno but
reared. in.Sierraville and Downieville, going to Los Angeles to attend
a high school about a year ago. The
groom resided in Downieville for a
year or more, and it was here that
the affection which resulted in marriage was formed.
Both Carmen and Walter are loved and respected by a large circle of
friends throughout Sierra county,
and hearty congratulations are offered.
From what I can learn there was
undoubtedly a murder at Lusk
Meadows. Blood for test was sent to
Berkeley on Monday and if this is
found te be human _ blood it is a
sure thing. Hair likely coming from
a woman’s head was also found, and
the interior of Mrs. Blosoom’s house
was a wreck showing that a desperate fight had taken place there. The
blood was still wet when found,
showing it was \les than 48 hours
old. Sheriff Bynonh. says he has a
clue, but District Attorney McMahon
is keeping very quiet until the tests
for human blood are returned from
Berkeley.
