Murray of San Francisco, with the State Railroad Commission, were in ‘Yreka recently to hear the case of ‘tthe Victory Gold Mines Company, ‘wherein complaint had been made by the company, asking that the California Oregon Power Company: be prevented from abandoning its. power dine over Salmon mountain. The California Oregon Power Company claimed it was receiving no revenue from this line, so decidedl to abandon it. The case did not come wo a hearing, as the officials of the ‘Victory mines withdrew their objections. A. M. Duley of Los Angeles, president of the mining company, and John Nefroney, manager, were in Yreka. Gregory Harrison, attorney from San Francisco, representing the California Oregon Power Company ~was also present. ; A tentative agreement was reached wherein the attorneys for both companies will draw up papers, after which the power company will abandon the line. It was built a couple of years ago with the ex. pectation that sufficient revenue ‘would be received to justify it. Judge C. J. Luttrell rendered a decision June 23, in the case of W. L. Roberts and Mabel C. Roberts against Harry R. Dimmick and Wiltiffs. : The case was tried in September, Bill Bull mine, tocated July 1, 1927, and the June Bug Mine, located July 1, 1928. Before the death of Ike Kleaver, the original owner of the mine, he deeded to his niece, Bertha Roberts, his mining interesis. : As she did not do the assessment work, W. L. Roberts relocated the mines in lieu of such work. Harry Dimmick’ and William Corbett also . filed. location notices, claiming the assessment work had not been done. The case created considerable interest at the time it was on trial and the decision has just been handed down. MARIPOSA : J. C. Kemp Van Ee and J. C. Kemp Van Ee, Jr., mining men of San Francisco, were in Mariposa recently making an inspection of the Colorado Quartz gold mine in which they are interested. COLD SUPPLY WILL. HAVE TO (Continued from page one). United States was 4,887,607 ounces. In 1929, it had fallen to the alarmdng total of 2,126,027 ounces (a decline of about 55 per cent). This decline would have been greater, more‘over, had it not been for the production from our copper, lead and silver mines, which accounted for 575,000 ounces of the 1929 gold production of 2,128,027. This by-product gold will decrease because of the shut-down of many copper and silver producers—low metal prices prevailing. And this sensational falling off in gold production has occurred in the face of the tremendous expansion of American business, the successful carrying on of which indefinitely requires more and more gold from the mine. ‘Is it any wonder then that the economists and financial Philosophers have been pacing the floor of nights? H. C. of L. No Reason The argument is advanced that the decline in gold mining and production was due exclusively to the high cost of living resulting from the war. But this is by no means wholly true. No sensible person would undertake to deny that this factor, particularly as affecting the cost of mine supplies, transportation, power, wages, €tc., added greatly to the burden of the miner for gold, but it does not by itself explain the héavy decline in the production of gold. ~~ The record of two outstanding tage merican gold mines, the Alaska Juneau and the Homestake, is a complete answer to this contention. During the period of the war, and up to _%%, their joint operations were ighly profitable. An important fact to be noted in this connection, moreover, is that the ores of the Alaska Juneau mine, which continued to operate so profitably during the entire Period, ran only ninety cents in ‘gold to the ton. It is interesting to observe, fur. therifore, that the copper mine, ex» cept for a brief period around 1921, continued to operate profitably during the entire period, although the price of copper metal suffered a deline to around 12 cents per pound and lower, and proportionately the copper operators suffered the same from the high costs of living ‘as did the gold miners. But capital went freely into copie) ae per, in spite of the handicaps of high costs; whereas, for some singular and as yet unexplained. reason, it avoided gold as though it were something unclean. The best explanation of this attitude by capital toward gold seems to be that for the period following the last Wilson administration ,capital, both through deliberate oragnization and unconscious leanings, dedicated itself to the great astonished attention of the world since the election of President Coolidge. : During that period it became unfashionable to deal in anything else but “industrials,” which, for the sake of the argument of capital, included the coppers. As for investments in gold mining however, why “it was just not being done.” It was distinctly unfashionable, and would have been regarded as a breach of Wall Street etiquette. The New Gold Era Is Here ~ However, the new era is about to dawn. for gold. The world is striving for gold, and needs it in ‘greatly increased quantities,—far more so than ever before in history. The need for new gold is so pressing that many conservative financial writers and economists are advocating a government subsidy of ten dollars per ounce liam Corbett, in favor of the plain1929, and involved the title to: the} the same neighborhood. The whole! THE NEVADA for the gold miner to ‘encourage production, and various other plans of governmental aid to the gold miner have been proposed. But~it ‘seems that these expedients will hardly be necessary, as capital at last has turned a friendly eye toward the gold miner and manifested a disposition to cooperate with him—him whom it has shunned for so many years. The situation furnishes to the gold Miner a last his long looked for and patiently awaited “place in the sun.” It is the history of American gold mining that capital is never so readily available as during.a dull period on the big Exchange which follows an Outstanding but collapsed boom in the “industrials,” “railroads” and “utilities.” Innumerable instances of this may be cited. This fact, taken together with the great and growing need for gold, should provide abundant encouragement to the owner of gold properties of _proven merit, or even of promising: prospects.
Capital Coming Soon In respect to the latter, it is almost certain that capital will be generously available very shortly for exploration and development of new gold mines, While as to production from proven ones, capital will be obtainable in abundance. The ‘‘knowing” mine operator can put his hands on many partiy, and nearly completed, gold propositions of great potential merit which need only the intelligent appreciation ot investors who can apply reason to scientific and sincere developments. A word should be said in reference to the high grade deposits, of which in. scattered localities, and at certain intervals, sensational discoveries are sometimes made. The world still remembers the marvelous discveries in different parts of Colorado, notably at Cripple Creek; the -record-breakJing strikes in Alaska in the early nineties, and in 1906-7 the sensational discoveries in the Hohawk, Florence, Combination and. other rich mines in the great camp of Goldfield, Nevada. Indeed, there are many men now living who from personal experienge recall thestirring scenes that accompanied. the discovery of gold in California, which startled the tide of migration westward and laid the foundations for the wonderful empire on our Pacific Coast. High-Grade Provides Thrills While it has been demontsrated that gold mines of low grade (like the Alaska Juneau, for example, whose ore average only 90 cents per ton) can be operated profitably, it is of course true that vastly larger profits in the minimum of time comes from the high-grade deposits, like those of Goldfield, for example. Moreover, it is these mines. that furnish the thrill and romance that make gold mining the most fascinating of pursuits, not only for the miner, but for the investor and shareholder as well. Herein we find the lure that Since the dawn of history has enticed man, as no other force could, to the remotest outposts of the wrld, regardless of incredible hardships, whether n the glaciers of Alaska, the hot sands of Australia, or the boiling deserts of Ariona and Death Valley. In the grand economy of nature, God seems to have decreed that these high grade treasure vaults of gold shall be opened only at stated interOre and Bullion Purchased Licensed by State of California Established 1907 WILDBERG BROS. SMELTING & REFINING Co, Offices: 742 Market St.,San Francisco Plant: South rancisco CITY NUGGET, discovery. As a matter of fact, nearly all gold discoveries of great richness have been made by humble prospectors, or, by men utterly ignorant of metals and minerals and the science of geology. When the hour strikes for a new treasure vault of gold to be opened covery falls to the lot, not of your trained geologist and engineer, btit the humblest and least informed of men——your pony express rider, .your sheepherder who follows his flocks for months. alone across the trackless desert, your covered wagon pioneer, your cowboy, and even your Untutored Indian of the western wilds. Regardless of the means of discoyery, however, that man or group of menis to be envied who draws the coveted capital price ofa rich, highgrade discovery of gold, whether in the placers of California or the rich quartz veins of Nevada, Colorado, o elsewhere. : > ih conclusion it is interesting to note the fact that during recent months several new gold mining enterprises have begun important operations in the development of ancient buried channels of many prehistoric gold-bearing rivers.—Mining Truth, Spokane, rash, U— Ignition Parts and Accessories at Miner’s Foundry. 24tt skill is competent to speed the day of. to the world, the role of actual dis-. .
