Grand Teton National Park, Wyo.
Many years ago a group of dude
ranchers here in northern Wyoming
decided to build a church.
That in itself is a little unusual,
but ‘when it was completed a very
unusual happening made it one of
the oustanding places of worship to
be found in the world.
A small, rustic structure, sis
chapel of the Transfiguration stands
in a pleasant green meadow at the
base of the rugged Teton ‘Mountains
here ‘in Grand Teton National Park.
It is just across the river from the
town of Moose, which is a store-postoffice, gas pump, four or five friendly people and an equally friendly
dog.
‘No one around here seems _ to
know exactly when the church was
built, Its pastor is away on vacation
so he can’t tell me. But it was
around twenty five years ago that
the dude ranchers laid it out and
construction began.
When the chapel was completed
it was found to be too dark inside so
an additional window was cut in the
back wall, behind what was to be
the altar. After that was done—
no altar was necessary. That four
by seven foot window accidentally
revealed a magnificent scene, far
more beautiful and in tune with our
Maker than any altar could possibly
have been. It is ‘the chapel’s altar
now and has become famous.
About 10 people can be seated in
this unique chapel during the 10 and
11 a. m,. services held during July
and August. They look right out of
that broad window and _= see—as
though expertly painted and framed
on the wall—the towering jagged
peak of Grand Teton, whose 13,766 foot top, first scaled in 1898 rises
over 7000 feeet above the _ valley
floor. They admire the snow capped
heads of Nex Perc and Mount Owen
twelve thousand and thirteen thousand feet in elevation respectfully,
the most difficult peaks of the range
to climb, a challenge to mountaineers until only eleven years ago when
they were finally mastered.
(People have journeyed from as far
away as Norway to be married in
this unusual church, Last year an
impressed artist visitor returned to
her New York studio and imade a pair
or exquisite stained glass windows
for the church’s small entrance hall;
one depicting the -beauty of this
Jackson Hole country ‘im summer, the
other glorifying in pink and white,
the Teton range in winter.
These Teton mountains are considered equal to the Swiss Alps, both
in beauty and dangers to climbers.
No party is allowed to attempt an
ascent today before reporting to ilo
cal rangers, who okay its equipment
and may insist upon use of the park’s
authorized guide service. No one is
allowed to risk his life alone, as
many have been lost on the steep
sides of the Tetons since their discovery by John Colter in 1807.
Created a national park in 1929,
this 150 square mile strip of the
Teton range is now penetrated by
86 miles of the finest trails of the
national park system. But above
them lurk shimmering glaciers and
almost perpendicular rock walls—
dangerous threats to those who
would scale the highest peaks.
Yet. from the valley below, from
the altar-window of the chapel of the
Transfiguration, those death dealing
peaks are things of beauty, forming
a fitting back drop for a holy place
of worship,
