was as fiery and dashing as any
gold hunter of a century ago.
Both Lola’s beauty and her escort’s pride made me timid about
starting the interview.
“Hello,” I began, as the judges
were awarding the pair a prize
ribbon,
She didn’t seem to hear me.
“Hello, Lola,” I said then. At
that, aquick turn of her head
set brown curls bobbing, and
dark eyes smiled ‘at me. So did a
amouth.-which-had. pearly.-teeth in.
it and a little stain of orange
lollypop around it.“Did you' have fun in the parade, Lola?” I ‘asked, ‘knowing
full well that the Lola Montez of
the 1850s always had fun in parades whether in Grass Valley or
before crowned heads in Europe.
I got ‘a nod ‘and another smile.
“Do you know about the real
Lola Montez?” I now: inquired.
A shake of brown curls, and
another smile.
“Lola’s” mother, Mrs. Rod McKean, 114 Reward Street, smiled
too. “Janet,” she said, “why don’t
you speak to the man?”
“No,” said Janet, putting her
into -her voice, “I don’t
“How old are you, Janet?”
“Five.”
Further interviewing of Janet
and others brought out these
facts:
The idea of the “Lola Montez”
float came from Janet’s mother,
who had always been a Lola
Montez fan: Sewing of the costume was done by Mrs. McKean
WILLIAM TAMBLYN NEW
PRESIDENT OF ROTARY
William Tamblyn was installed
as president of the Nevada City
Rotary Club last night at a steak
picnic held at Pioneer park.
Other officers installed were
Lloyd Geist, secretary; Andy Larsen and J. Paul Bergemann, twoyear directors; and Dr, Jerome
Frey, one-year director.
Robert Tamblyn,’ chairman of
the installation committee, which
included Ed Frantz and Guerdon
Ellis;-was-in-charge of.the-ceremonies.
Marvin Shock is retiring president.

and her neighbor, Mrs. Harry J.
Kessel. The wagan for the float
was furnished by the Kessel son,
Philip, 11. And it was Philip,
wearing a mustache of eyebrow
pencil and a real miner’s helmet
and lamp, who pulled the float
in the parades.
Janet, though only five, had
some parade experience. Four
years ago, at the age of 17 months
she rode in a Fourth of July parade at Colfax. That time too she.
was surrounded by blue;. only it
was blue hydrangeas arranged on
a white-draped pickup truck.
Mrs. McKean likes Janet in
blue. But if you ask Janet, “Are
your eyes blue?” she will smile
and answer, “No! They’re brown,
like my daddy’s.” :
SHADES OF ERNIE
PINKERT; WHAT A BLOCK
A few years back when Howard Jones produced the greatest
college, football team of all time
—the rampaging Trojans of the
early 30’s, gridiron fans often
saw “Rosey” Rosenberg or Ernie
Pinkert sweep :around end leading interference for “Cotton”
Warburton or Orv Mohler, and
take out/the.defensive end with
a bone-crunching block that sent
the player up-ended into the air
and. definitely out of.the,play...
A demonstration of such perfect blocking made .an unscheduled appearance Saturday morning ‘during the time trials of the
coaster derby. a
As John Raetz :was wheeling.
his coaster across the Pine street
intersection of Broad, Norval
Hammond, 35, walked into the
pathway of the coaster and was
struck below the knees. Hammond was upended, bounced off
the hibod of the vehicle and hit
the. pavement head first.
Two bystanders helped him to
his feet and he walked away, apparently not seriously injured.
