SALMON MINE LOOKS
FINE WITH PAY ORE
Excellent reports continue to
come from the Salmon mine = at
Badger Hill, which is being developed by the Parnall Gold Mines Corporation of Los Angeles. W. D. Hill
managing director. The drif on the
150 level which recently opened up
a very promising shoot, has a six
foo tshowing of ore in the face at
the present time. The high grade
rock is being sacked for’ the smelter
shipment while a large quantity of
good milling rock is being accumulated on the dumps.
A ten stamp mill is contemplated
for erection this year. R. C. Leadbetter is superintendent of operations: ee =
GASTON MINE SHOWS —
PROMISING VALUES
is being opened up on the 1500 tunnel level property at the Gaston.
mine which carries much promise
with it. There is a good streak of
high grade running through it. President Sam Shannon. of the Rescue
Eula interests operating the property, reports that June milling approximated 1500 ons of ore with
the ore averaging better than previous runs, which is encouraging.
The first 650 tons of the mill
run produced $2000.
The Gaston ore has always been a
comparatively low grade proposition
but the immense ore bodies on the
property coupled. with its being ena working makes the
handling and milling inexpensive and
for good net production returns. The
early installation of electric power
due to the extension of the Alleghany line into ‘the Gason section,
should make the Gaston one of the
large producers of the county the
coming year.
CHATFIELD APPOINTED
MINE SUPERINTENDENT
Solon S. Chatfield, well known
local mining man, has been appointed underground superintendent for
the Humboldt Sulphur Company,
operating a large property at Sulphur, near Winnemucca, Nevada.
He left Friday to take up his new
duties. His family will leave later
to join him. :
The property has been in Htigation the past year and this having
been recently cleared up, the company is resuming operations on a
large scale. There is a ledge ten
feet wide and the ore looks like
green glassy quartz. The ore is run
through a 176 ton MHardinge bal)
mill and concentrated.
Mr. Chatfield is well and favorably known here, the family hav.
ing been connected with the mining
industry in this and Sierra counties
for a number of years. He has
lately been connected with the
Murchie property for the past two
‘years. '
SEVERAL HEADS CUT
OFF AT GRASS VALLEY
The: inauguration .of the new city
council at Grass Valley lopped off
a number from the city pay roll last
week. Our neighboring municipality
will worry along with a smaller
stock of blue coats on patrol duty,
while.C. F. Lobecker, who has been
city clerk for a) number of years,
was retired from active duty as was
Police Judge John Mulroy and City
Attorney Lynne Kelly. With regard
to the latter office, the council proposes to go it legally on a free
lance basis, calling in the barristers
as necessary. Miss Bertha Fuller is
acting city clerk, George Bennetts
as superintendent of public works,
T. H. Williams water consultant,
John Northway and Otto Rust police
force. Frank Kitto dog warden and
Jack Faucette garbage undertaker.
_ Mrs. Mattie Eddy had as a visitor

Mina Hartman, of Sacramento.
Visitors at the Charles Genasci

GRACIE SHAFT IS.
BEING SUNK 150.
FEET AT PRESENT
Sinking of the Gracey shaft was
commenced the past week and Saturday afternoon saw three sets of
timbers in place. The shaf’ which
is now to the 170 level is to be
earried 150 deeper at nce.
A winze was sunk in the drift
to a deph of 56 feet on tthe vein
and the or shoot continued in good
values all the way which has encouraged the management to sink
the shaft at once and extensive dedevelopment is to be undertaken.
The property which consists of
three claims on the faomus Orleans
yein system was equipped with a ten
stamp mill last year, and electric
hoist and with a vertical two compartment shaft newly timbered -in
massive fashion looks to become
one of the district’s large producers in the next few years as soon
as sufficient development work has
been done o warrant steady operation of the mill.
The Orleans vein system extending a distance of four miles from
the noted Champion property on
Deer.creek to Banner Mountain
which contains vast mineral wealth,
runs directly through the Gracie
holdings and this property is in a
strategic position with egard to the
running of the projected four mile
drain tunnel which has been held up
by: litigation for the past year.
SURFACE WORK STARTING
AT GRAY EAGLE MINE
Two new levels are being started
at the Gray Eagle mine east of
Downieville by the Yellow Tiger
Consolidated to intersect the pay
shoot picked up on the present tunnel level. These are being run in
from the surface to develop further
the ore body on the tunnel level,
and also to intersect another ore
shoot known to exist further along.
If the present summer developments warrant it, new milling facilities will be installed this fall.
Gordon M. Bettles is general manager and superintendent in charge
of operations. ©
WORK AT GASTON IS
PROCEEDING NICELY
In the illness of general manager
Otto B. Schiffner of the Rescue
Eula interests, Gordon M. Bettles
is looking after the Gaston — property and keeping the wheels moving.
The last cleanup at the mill has
proved somewhat more satisfactory
than had been expected. Development work is proceeding steadily
and with the installation of electric
power facilities it is expected that
developmient work on a much lareer scale will be undertaken.
The main system exposes an
enormous ore body which is characteristic of the Gaston property.
ROLLO WRIGHT NAMED

Rollo Wright, son of Mr. and
Mrs. H. J. Wright has been named
as manager of the Nevada County
business of the Inter County -Title
Company, succeeding Mrs. Anna
Tucker who has been acting in that
capacity for some years past. The
appointment came in the nature of
a great surprise as Mrs. Tucker has
been exceedingly popular with those
who have occasion to transact business at the court house and with
the title company. The change was
effective Monday.
Mr. Wright has been connected
with the company office at Sacramento and is well versed in title
matters and. will make his company
an efficient representative.

TURPENTINE 10
BE REFINED BY
END OF MONTH
Work of installing the
ery of the California Timber Products, Inc., is progressing satisfactorily and the new plant should be
ready to function by the end of the
present month, according to normal
calculations.
There are sixteen. tons of raw
gum ready for the refinery already
in storage and there will be around
20 tons ready
operations. The plant when
operation will utilize around ten
tons per day which willl call for a
much larger production from tapping. ss
The brick work surrounding the
pipe coils is now being installed by
E. S. Matteson and will be rushed
to completion. A new steam boiler
has been purchased and will be installed at once.
An item of interest is that some
of the best workers in the timber
who were able to make but 500 cuts
per day at the start have now been
able to work up to 2000 cuts per
day which is the eastern standard.
Visitors at Lake Vera are able to
observe some of the tapping operations along the roadside. on the Tom
Mooney tract. More cuts are being
used on some of the trees than are
regularly employed as those heavily
tapped are to be cut off later. By
the present method of tapping, the
trees are preserved indefinitely
where the owner does not desire to
utilize the tree for wood or: lumber. The company’ gives a written
guarantee that it will not destroy
any timber by reason of tapping.
The coming of the turpentine
industry to Nevada county means a
great deal for the future prosperity
of the county and Nevada City
This major industry was one of
the accomplishments of the Chamber
of Commerce and the local papers.
PROMOTION BODY ASKS
$5000 APPROPRIATION
At a meeting of the Directors of
the Development Asasociation and
the Promotion Board held in the
supervsors’ chambers Monday night,
the proposal that the sum of $5000
be included in the next tax budget
for the use of the Promotion Board
was made. It was” estimated that
this would raise the tax rate considerably. The proposition was also
put forward to amalgamate the two
organizations, the Development Association presumably to lose its identity in the process and its fund of
$2000 annually to be added to the
$5000.
The Promotion Board was well represented at the meeting and many
arguments were advanced in behali
of the $5000 proposal.
At the meeting
for the opening of
in. full
of the board of
supervisors Tuesday morning the request for the appropriation was
formally made and a recital of the
accomplishments of the Promotion,
Board for the past year was given,
together with endorsement by the
Grass Valley Chamber of Commerce
the Truckee Chamber of Commerce
and the. Nevada County Farm Bureau. The matter was taken under
advisement by the board.

PRODUCES NEAR
2 MILLIONS GOLD
By the figures just released by
the United States Deparment of
Commerce, the production of gold
in Nevada county the past year
reached almost two miliion dollars
from 16 quartz and 34 placer operating properties. The exact amount
recorded was $1,994,002. :
There were 219,264 tons of ore
mined to produce 94,587.98 fine
Amador county which leads slightly
in gold production shows 107,55-64
fine ounces from 408,045 tons of ore
which Nevada county ore to
be much in gold content
than the Mother lode country, by @
considerable margin in fact nearly
100 per cent better. From an investment standpoint this is of considerable interest as showing that
our ore is of high value. Amador
has thirteen working quartz mines
against. sixteen for Nevada while
Nevada has 34. placer’ properties ,
operating as aganst 12 for Amador.
Calaveras county shows 23 quartz
and 25 gravel properties working

tal suadueien with $2
most entirely from
Hammonton.
Sierra county has a respectable
output of gold with 11 quartz and
30 placer properties showing a total
production of $674,855. From 31,796
,304,377, althe dredgers at
tons of ore came 31,117.42 unces
of gold, or nearly an ounce per
ton which is quite some showing,
largely due to the production of
che famous Sixteen to-One at Alleghany. ae
California’s gold production dropped off nearly a million dollars in
1928 over 1927 but showed an increase in production of quartz gold
of over $100,000 which is a favorable omen. The Sacramento Valley
farmers: with their age old prejudice against the production of placer gold can be charged with the
decrease in that department.
