Each took an equal part?
1 wonder if in times past, horse trading was regarded by
its addicts, as a most exciting and pleasurable diversion; it inedge, clarity of vision, diplomacy and supe?Y-salesmanship.
Try to imagine yourself as a horse trader of the old school
and see if you can’t catch something of the thrill once enjoyed
by your Yankee ancestors; you and an acquaintance—chance
or otherwise, lead your respective hosses out for inspection.,
While he is prodding, poking and thumping . your purblind
pinto .pulling his reluctant jaws agape and carefully scrutinizing tell tale molars, you are performing the same ceremonies upon his rangy roan. hie. examination is completed,
you talk things over, decide Which horse sports the greater
number of defects, you throw in a second hand surcingle toboot, nose bag or a couple of woolen horse blankets, after
which you conduct your new nag to the family paddock. Your
serene ego is permeated with a glow of satisfaction and in
your heart is the uplifting knowledge that you have played a
keen gam2 — more or less ethically and taken a number of
points which your friend completely overlooked.
Not much of a trade perhaps; that is, if judged by modern standards, but think of the ease with which it was consummated. You were unhampered by sales, _ transporation
and inheritance taxes, red tape or governmental supervision,
and you were not compelled to join The Hoss Traders’ Union,
local or international.
I ‘wonder at the extremity of bad taste and poor judgment displayed by the German Blunderbund, in selecting
Memorial Day as a time for the demonstration of its chemically pure allegiance to a foreign dictator. May thirty has long
been held sacred to the memory of those who gave their lives
that the principles and institutions of democracy might live.
Upon that day when Freedom's flag was unfurled throughout
a greatful land, from border to border, and the strains of The
Star Spangled Banner thrilled the air, as patriotic citizens
gathered to pay tribute to our honored dead, the cacophony of
gutteral hieling struck an indiscribably discordant note. Perhaps the crude affrontry manifested by this subversive organization, will serve to damn it in the minds of all true Americans and bring its undesirable actiwities to a speedy termination.
Uncle Silas says: ‘I think it high time we stop lauding
the Canadian Mounted, and toss a few compliments in the
direction of our soutthwestern border patrol, Smugglers are
usually bad hombres, and there are fifty seven varieties of
them along that lower border.

ning ‘we got real brave and peregrinated as far as Sacramento. We trotted: hither amd yon iand found a
place called’ the Eureka club (street
not noted,) This is a very attractive
dine and dance place run by Negroes
and really excellently run too, there)
is a floor show that is good, with
one colored gent who really shakes
a mean hard shoe. If fact we haven’t
seen anything as good in this line
for quite some time. There is another immense dark gentleman who
has a remarkably sweet voice for so
huge a chunk of Ethopia, and some'
very slender young brown maidens
who do tap routines. The food,
southern of course, is excellent and
the service is good, but the cream on
the baked apple. is the perfectly
amazing fine dance band. Lads and
llassies, believe us, that’s music with
rhythm that is irresistable. If you
like to dance, you should try this
spot, don’t think you’d have any difificulty finding it. —

This week’s word of wisdom: To
@well in the past to stunt the spirit.
This week’s chuckle: The sweet
young thing who naively stated that
virtue is her relaxation. .
We wrestle with a personal: probjem: We have been acquiring ourselves a very presentable tan—but
‘ur nether limbs, They have the ap‘pearance of slightly overstuffed,
slightly discombabulated and very
definitely very sick worms. How to
speed up the tanning thereof, ‘we
would like to know. Any advice?
Which query reminds us of an incident of many years ago, in fact we
remember it not onlly as if it were
yesterday but ‘practically as if it} We had quite a time this week
‘peat we bit, the answer ‘was,
were the day before. Being a sufferer of that disease which has destroyed so many cats (curiosity) we
answered an ad, which for the sum of
one shilling (two bits American)
the revelation of a permament cure
for a red nose was promised, to rewe
quote, “quit drinking.” We didn’t
feel so good about thiat one.
We ramble: We have been roving
around lately, in fact the other evetrying to find a birthday card for a
friend, but each shop we went to was
so flooded with graduating cards we
could fine nothing suitable so in
desperation we sent a graduating
card too, for upon reflection we came
to the conclusion that: a birthday is
a type of graduation, or at least it
ought to be.
And so, we say to you, cheerio,
everybody.

About 3000-students last year enrolied in khe University of California extension division, correspondence
courses, While this is an inicrease
over past figures, it still seems very
small in view of the huge populathon of the state and the great advantages which this excellent department of correspondence courses offers to the public for a nominal sum.
The extension division of the University giyes cornespondence courses in

study engaging intellec.ual activity
is participated in, the mental life of
an adult is doomed in most cases to
a rut of newspapers, magazines and

An evil which accompanies’ the

study a course in which they are interested find that an excellent byproduct of their specialized study is
that in keeping their minds open and
willing to learn one subjest they have
unconsciously ‘acquired the ability to

SMALL BUSINESS
MEN’S CONCLAVE
IS POSTPONED
SACRAMENTO, June 9. — The
eall for a conference of small business men for June 10-11, issued by
Governor Merriam, has received a
very generous response, not alone
from: the business men of fhe state
but from other interests who recognize the value of such a conference
in bringing-about improved conditions in commercial, industrial and
labor lines. Its importance in relation to employment and prosperity, is
fully recognized. The governor says:
“Because of this. generous response
and the demands for a much larger
and extended program than had
been contemplated, it seems advisable to postpone the dater until later. The question of representation
has also been raised. It is contended
that some plan should be devised
that will provide an equitable method and accord to the different lines
of business the naming of certain
representation.
there should be some ‘basis for’ the
selection off delegates that will give
to each}city and county representation in accordance with its "business.
The desire is that the conference
shoulg@ ‘become a represenitative
group rather than a mass meeting. .
“When I agreed to the request of
small business to call a statewide
meeting, it was with the idea and
desire of holding a conference at
which their special problems could
be discussed, and’ it could be determined what could best be done to secure changed conditions.
“It Inas. also been suggested that
small business men’s conferences in
the various districts might well be
held prior to and preparatory for the
langer state meeting, It is stated:
1. That many of the small
ibusiness men’s problems are loeal, a survey would show. These
could well be considered in a
district conference. :
2.: That many of the small
business men cannot take time
