A MAN’S A MAN FOR A’ THAT
It was Kipling who, speaking of the East and West, concluded “that ne'er the twain shall meet.”
__ The license of poets of course permits them to utter generalities of this kind. It was East and West meeting however,
which resulted in the creation of such a talented Eurasian as
Lafcadio Hearn. It might be pleaded that an instance of this
kind is one of the exceptions that prove the poet’s general
rule, but we surmise that in some centuries, or at most a thousand or two years, East and West will meet, as they have already met and amalgamated in eastern Europe and the Near
East, and we shall have, to use a geological term, a conglomerate race, and but one race. :
In another sense East and West have long since met.

tion of the sterling virtues arid fundamental honesty of the .
Chinese merchant class. The great trade and splendid trade .
relationship the United States today enjoys with China, typi.
cal of which is the $50,000,000 dollar loan the United States .
is today making China (much to the vexation of Japan), are
due in great measures to the complete understanding of the
Yankee trading mind with the Chinese trading mind.
This trading compact, dating back to the very beginning
of the clipper ships, has been more or less sentimentalized,
but by and large China, and, until recently, Japan, never has .
had a truer and more steadfast friend than Uncle Sam. Wit-.
ness, to recall but one of many instances in which our friend.
ship has been demonstrated, the use of the Boxer indemity
millions as an. educational fund for young Chinese students in .
American universities.
But the meeting of East and West goes much further
even than that in California. Among those Argonauts who
came to ‘these here hills’ in search of gold were hundreds of
Chinese, as eager for gold as the Caucasians and perhaps more
so, since the Chinese people, along with being very ancient,
has for so many centuries been poverty ridden in a sense that
no one in this country or in Europe could possibly understand.
It is true that there was a period of persecution of these
pigtailed, slant eyed people from the trans-Pacific: our hardy
forefathers were not always just to them; they were often .
blindly intolerant; but as time wore on, the admirable patience
the indefatigable and ever-lasting industry, the inherent honesty and peace loving attributes of these aliéns, began to be
understood and respected.
It dawned on those who used their heads to think with,
that while these strange humans from over the seas were different, still they were men, and no mean type of men, when
they came to know them well.
The fine flowering of this discovery is taking place .
today. We find for instance, the Grass Valley Chamber, and
we doubt not some of the members of that organization ‘are .
deacons or officers in Protestant churches, restoring for an
aged Chinese his place of worship. They respect that spirit
which would impell a so-called idolator, to creep over the packed snow through a broken window, into the ruined abode of
his gods. It was a fine, humanitarian service, aside from any
of its sentimental and historical values, that the chamber rendered this old, old man. Though its a seeming paradox, we go
further, and say that this rebuilding of a home for “‘idols’’ was
a Christian service.
Then again, over in Alleghany, among those burned out
by the recent fire was a humble old Chinese, named Fong.
What takes place there? Why, while everybody else is rebuilding, a purse is being made up, mainly among those who
have lost much and have little to spare, to rebuild for F ong
his home. There are plenty of people who remember when
Fong was younger; .they remember his kindness, his civic
mindedness,.and those:gualities of character which make the
man, regardless of: the color of skin he wears over his heart.
On the whole we think Kipling was wrong, that time will
prove him wrong to racial meetings and that as_ to social
and economic relations he was wrong when he wrote.
