SAN FRANCISCO, June 12.—With: 97,434’: men employed as of May 1, California aircraft producers are playing a major part in arming the nation and Great Britain, the Aircraft Information Bureau reported today. This 97,434 men compare with the less than 40,000 employed last spring and the 70,196 as of January this year. Since the first of the year there has been an increase of 27,238 aircraft workers. Major companies who reported their employment figures to the Aircraft Information Bureau are Consolidated, Douglas, Lockheed, North American, Northrop, Ryan and Vultee. With the increase in employment has come a change in the methods of production from that of making aircraft in small lots to their production on the assembly line. Instead of working one shift a day, all the plants are working three shifts, on holidays, Sundays and vacation time. Latest state statistics published by H. C, Carrasco state labor commissioner, show that aircraft work in the year from April, 1940, to April 1941 is up 134 per cent and payrolls are up to 193 per cent.
