The inadequacy of this method is shown when people of high school age or over make such} -mistakes in definition as these: The . word hassock has been variously defined. t 1. A hassock is a garment worn by the clergy. 2.A sailor lay in his” hassock. 3. Hassock is the name given to . the Rushian cavalrymen. ; 4. The second baseman slid into the hassock. Or such misapplication as these: 1. The increment took place in Mt. Hope cemetery. 1. The man was indigent because he was snubbed, When our heedlessness leads to such absurdities as these, it is not hard to see the importance training Plays in proper us of languages. Then slang and loose expressions Play their havoe with conversation. People seize upon slang. because it is new and amusing, use it incessantly until it becomes a habit, and they forget that it is forced and probable
completely inappropriate. Another contributing factor to the fall .of good English may be found in the evil influences of various agencies. Much modern literature is of poor standard, and English takes another hard knock. Néwspapers are careless and are exceedingly useful in spreading newly coined phrases. The theatre and the radio at times are dire& sources of slang, and they seem to be the standards of reference for the young Americans. All these things . Don’t forget the Rice Bowl Bal) and Oriental Pageant to be held in the Veterans Memorial Building on June 16 at 8 p. m. The tickets are $1.00 and the products go to the war sufferers in China. It is a worthy cause and well merits your patronage. I will be in the Oriental motive and we feel sure it will interest you, And so with that, we say to you, cheerio, everybody. a command of it is. What appeal can we maké to our people? Ours is a polyglot nation and therefore we cannot appeal to the patriotie pride of its citizen since most of them have a sirong loyalty for a mother tongue, whose roots are deep in a foreign soil. Another hindrance is that America cannot depend on wide reading to develop good English, as the average persons reads little of worthy literature; and when he does, he chooses condensed magazines such as the numerous digests, which maybe excellent for content but have little value in literary form. If ‘we turn to what shouldbe legitimate sources of pure English, we meet destructive influences there: the radio, the screen, the press, and even teachers with master’s degrees. What is there for the progressive citizen to do? People who protest against the looseness and mutilation of the language are called ‘‘old-fashioned and reactionary”. And when the situation is thoroughly analyzed “This guy Angelo Saxon” needs éarnest attention. This fact is only combine to bring about destruction and degradation of such a_ great thing as the English language. _Taking all the foregoing facts into consideration, what is the future for the English language? There is just one choice for the American people to make: to wake-up to the possibilities of their language, to more emphasized when we think of the possibility that in future years English may ‘become the international tongue; and since foreigners learning English in their own countries do so correctly and precisely, Americans are ,faced with the absurd situation of being the only. ones who will not be able to speak the univervalue it,.and to realize -how essential sal language correctly. : Drnorocranren no guess work. 8-hour Kodak finishing service.
