A Sad Fall,
Miss Winnie Smith, a thirteen-year
old Grass Walley school girl, while
playing ‘‘wolf”’ in the school yard
some days since slipped and fell, Her
face came in contact with a large sharp
pebble and caused a bad wound over
her left eye. Mrs, Leech, her teacher, at once bound up the wound and
sent the girl home. On reaching her.
residence Winnie swooned and entered a comatose state all efforts to revive her from which have go far failed. Three doctors are in attendance
and it is thought that even if she recovers her brain may prove to have
been permanently injured,

A Failure in Their Case,
In the Superior Court Saturday Mary M. Gassaway was granted a divorce
from Joseph Gassaway. The parties
are well known natives of Grass Valley, and the divorce was a surprise to
their many friends whe had no reason
~ tobelieve that thé marriage was other than a happy one, as both Parties
are regarded as of an amiable disposition. Mrs. Gassaway and her children arenow at the residence of her
father, H. B. Nichols of the wellknown “Nichols milk ranch.”

The Lewis Divorce Case.
It is said that the Grass Valley clerical divorce case of Lewis vs. Lewis is
to be contested. Some, friend of the
wife wrote to her of the star chamber
proceedings here and she at once telegraphed to a lawyer, to appear for her
and contest the case. Mrs. Lewis is
the daughter of an ex-Mayor of the
city of Fredericksburg, Va., and her
Gravel Mine Leased.
J.T, O’Carrol of Omega, who is in
town, says that the Omega company
have leased their gravel claim toa
company of Chinamen who will put
in a dam to impound the debris and
then go to work by the hydraulicking
process. It is reported that the Chinamen pay $16,000 for workiug . the
claim eight or ten months.»
