Most people think of ‘ol, W. F.
(Buffalo Bill)) Cody as a \wi'd-west .
slayer of the sturdy beast “he was
named for and as an Indian fighter
of the first water. Few realize that
behind that great man’s dash and
lay a° mind that planned an
empire—the building of the West.
His ability as a showman: as '‘proven by the tremendous appeal of his
Wild West Show that toured this
country and Europe, was also used
to promote interest and ‘fira imaginations for the development of ‘his old
stamping grounds into a rich cat le-!
raising country and agricultural gargen spot.
Founded by Buffalo Bill in 1900,
this town began as the center of the .
irrigation project he started. Subse-'
quent development by the U. S. Reclamation Service added the Shoshone
irrigation system and the dream of;
that early pioneer has materialized.

sportsmen flock here now’ to bag

was always serious business decades
ago, the present vast cattle industry

the tenderfoot a itry at a ‘brone and
a few gulps of fresh, mile high air.
In Buffalo Bill's day the’ only
things®*that flew around wore feathers, but now a modern airport at
the edge of town receives regular .
visits from sleek airplanes. .

But all this doesn’t mean that the!
town has lost all its frontier flavor.
; It’s still a Western town populated
i by 8.000 Westerners who nightly
hold a noisy rodeo—not for the benefit of tourists, but just for the. fun

. annual Cody Stampede is a big, ripsnorting rodeo and show that brings
and entertains visitors by the thousands. .
Although Buffalo Bill’s remains!
are entombed on distant Lookout
Mountain in Colorado, the town of
‘Cody is ever conscious of its famous
frontier-secout founder. It is lamentable tha’ his ‘grave doesn’t overlook
the finished results of his tireless
efforts. In fact, persistent rumors
have it that early residents of Cody
threatened to quietly tunnel. into
Lookout Mountain, steal Bill’s casket and place it in Cody, where they
figured it rightfully belonged. But
the: tomb was heavily reenforced!
with concrete to forestall any such.
