EARLY DAY GEOGRAPHY EXPLAINS CREATION OF
WORLD BY QUOTING GENESIS; NEVADA CITY WAS
ELEVENTH IN POPULATION RANK FOR THE STATE
In the Nevada County Historical Museum on Main street is a
copy of the 1876 edition of Monteith’s Physical and Political Geography and bears the name of Nora McArthur on the inside cover.
The book is rather ragged and badly in need of rebinding but it
has a wealth of information interesting to the modern generation.
From it we learn that Nevada City ranked eleventh in population in California for the 1870 census with Grass Valley in sixth
place. According to the 1940 census Nevada City ranks 215th in
California. San Francisco rankéd tenth in the nation in population
in 1870. Nevada City counted 3,986 persons and Grass Valley had
7,063. The population of the other ‘nine leaders of the state were
San Francisco, 149,473; Sacramento, 16,283; Oakland, 10,500; Stockton, 10,066; San Jose, 9,089; Vallejo, 6,391; Los Angeles, 5,728;
Marysville, 4,738; Petaluma, 4,588.
In 1870 there were only 15 cities in the U. S, with more than
100,000 population—the 1940 census revealed 92. Rank of the. top
15 in 1870 with their 1940 rank in parentheses is as follows: New
York (1), Philadelphia (3), Brooklyn (now part of New York), St.
Louis (8), Chicago (2), Baltimore (7), Boston (9), Cincinnati (17),
New Orleans (15)? San Francisco (12), Pittsburgh (10), Buffalo (14),
Washington (11),"Newark (18); and Louisville (25).
Virginia with 7,048 was the largest city in Nevada, with Gold
Hill and Hamilton second and third. All three are practically memories today. :
We find. some .errors probaby due to faulty surveys and_ in.
complete data. Mt. Whitney is listed 88 feet higher than in current .
geographies. Mt. McKinley along with the future president was .
unknown. in 1870.. Mt.Ranier (as it was spelled) in’ Washington’
territory was estimated at 8,000 feet altitude. The map shows .
Dorris as the county seat of Modoc in the present location of Altur.
as. Whether it is an error.or whether the town of Dorris moved .
to-its present location in Siskiyou county we do not know.
There were 52 counties in California in 1870, the counties of !
today unheard of ‘then being Glenn, Madera, Kings, Riverside, Imperial and Orange. Part of Humboldt today was Siskiyou county
giving it a seacoast in the Trinidad area. Humboldt City was the
seat of Humboldt county and Shasta City ‘the seat of Shasta county.
Both have disappeared as communities, the seats of county govSilver
Mountain City is now Markleeville and San Buenaventura has been
chopped to Ventura.
Prominent communities of 1870 that have disappeared or nearly
so include Orleans Bar, Canon City, Grove City, Coloma, Monoville,
Snellings, Benton, Owensville, Millerton, Scottsburgh, San Antonio,
Woodville, Havilah, Keysville, Brooklyn, Dutch Flat, Fort Yuma
and Pescadero.
According to the map railroad mileage in California was not
too high, the main line of the Central Pacific being the principal
trackage. The coast line ran a few miles south of Salinas from
where a stagecoach line continued to Paso Robles and crossed the
Lost Hills to Famosa where it connected with another rail line that
ran from Stockton to Bakersfield. Stage coaches connected the
Kern county city with the east and Los Angeles where there were
a few isolated tracks. What is now the Northwestern Pacific went
only as far as Healdsburg. The Cascade branch of the present-day
Southern Pacific ran as fat as Shasta City from where stages operated into Oregon. The coastal towns of Crescent City, Humboldt
City, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, San Buenaventura and San
Diego were served only by ship. ‘
Young Miss McArthur had to answer these questions when she
finished studying about California: Can you answer them? What
latitudes form the northern and southern boundaries? What is the
length of the state? What two large rivers drain the great valley?
What is the largest river in the northwest part of the state? What
river empties into Monterey bay? What is the ‘largest lake in the

state capital? Name the counties. Draw an outline of the state,
and locate at least 14 mountain peaks, 24 rivers, 20 lakes, 8 bays,
8-islands, and all 52 counties and: their seats. Kind of a rough go,
isn’t it?
“Incidentally California led the nation ,.in production of gold,
wine, wool, quicksilver, silk and grapes. Nevada led in silver.
Monteith’s Geography explained the creation of the earth by
quoting almost verbatim the Genesis books of the Israelite Bible.
And taught for his first two points that “God made the world,” and
“He made it for the use of man.”
Apparently the forerunner of the California Chamber of Commerce had-a hand in the book. Appearing under the climate section is the statement, “California possesses a more éven and delightful climate than any other part of the world.”
Animal life in 1870 was classified from Radiates, to Mollusks,
Articulates, Fishes, Reptiles, Mammals and Man.
The book gives an answer to the why of man (for the glory
and edification of God) and proclaims the superiority of the white
race and brooks no questioning.
