LOLOL III
(By H. M. L.)
A writer chap in Kansas sends out
“a column called: ‘‘Do you ever stop
°io think?’’ Rather an arresting idea
until examined critically. Imagine
all of us stopping whatever we are
doing, to think. As a matter of fact
busy people do most of their thinking while they are doing. Thinking
is not a process which ordinarily requires stopping. A lawyer or doctor
hurrying to an appointment rarely Clark Carter; home on a furlough
1alts in his tracks to. think. It} after completing his four years at
would Ge a queer world indeed if. the naval academy, in response to
thinking were divorced from action.
Really when we stop, it is to dream, .
and not to think.
It is difficult for the human eye
“to see growth of any kind. Under
the microscope the eye may perceive
the actual growth of certain bacteria. But the growth of a child, of a
plant, and even of a community is
so gradual that the eye fails to perceive the gradations. But by contracts, by ‘remembered measurements, it is easy to perceive growth.
Nevada County two years ago, contrasted with Nevada County today
shows a very remarkable growth.
Two years ago, in March, in Nevada
County, there were 1200 miners employed. This June there are more
than 2200 men employed, a difference of 1000. These thousand men
have undoubtedly brought at least
2000 others with them, wives, children or relatives into this county.
This would mean an_ increase
population to the county, credited
to the mining industry alone, of
3,000.
But the merchants, the restaurants, the beauty shops, the hotels,
‘the contractors and builders, the
building material dealers, have also
increased their forées and augmented the ranks of our business community to serve this influx of miners. Another thousand population
has been added to the county, it is
safe to say, to take care of the needs

gives this interview to the Nugget:
“The Naval Academy course is a
long and hard road but it must be
that way in order to accomplish its
purpose, Rated as one of the best
engineering schools in the country,
it is hard to get into and once there
it requires a little extra effort to
stay. When you. have finished, you
have besides your diploma and ring,
the age old expression of the service, ‘‘well done.”
“There are several openings ayail-’
able for one who wants to enter.
There are scongresional appointments, senatorial appointments, and
presidenal appointments and many
have joined the regular navy or
marine corps and entered from the
service. The examinations are nearly as varied as the appointments.
There are what are termed regular
examinations, in six subjects, substantiating examinations in two subjects and college certificates. There
is only one physical examination
available for entrance and that must
be taken at the academy, Preliminary physical examinations may be
taken by permit from the navy department and are held at all navy
yards and stations. These do not in
any way replace the examination at
the academy.
“The four year ‘course covers
many varied subjects all o which are
deemed necessary to a naval officer’s life. Desciptive’ seometry, mar-.

\ And of building up again;
‘And he longs for the peaceful valley
Where he spent his idle youth,
Dreaming the dreams of boyhood:
And learning its lessons of truth.
In the maze of alluring visions,
He turns with a weary sigh
From the throbbing heart of the city
Where the tides of life sweep by;
And he yearns for the gentle murmurs
Of a stream that once he knew,
Forgetting that only the builder
Can make his dreams come true.
Go, rear your airy castles
By the river’s rippling tide,
Then come with your wistful fancies
And stand by the builder’s side;
His soul must capture the vision,
His hands the work must do,
For only the. skillful builder
Can make your dreams come true.
Sing then a song of the city
With its turmoil and its strife,
Where dreamers and builders together
Are molding the pattern of life;
Where together they strive for the future
__ With pride in the work they do,
And the magical task of the builder
Is to make our dreams come true.

The Nugget makes no ridiculous
claim to having brought. ali this
about. The underlying reason,: of
course, is the increase in the price
of gold. It only claims to have called the attention of the world outside the county, to the unusually
favorable conditions which here exist, both for employment and for
capital inves nt. In doing this, it

The benefit of this publicity: given
monthly to mining and mining opportunities cannot be measured in any
certain terms or figures. The general
result, however, is obvious. Grass
Valley and Nevada City are growing
closer together along the four-mile
highway between them. Even now,
employment, particularly in the
skilled trades, is depleting the ranks
of the SERA. For instance a skilled
worker on the municipal park project, yesterday gave notice that his
services were no longer available.
He had found employment at $110
per month with board and lodging
provided. This is one of many straws
in the wind and significant.
