For Humanity’s Sake i
Forces of evil run riot through the headlines in this day
and age. Press wires hum with stories of international hatred
and suspicion, of corruption in high places, of industrial violence, of individuals who cheat, rob and kill their fellow men.
Sometimes it is comforting to recall that the forces of
good are also active, that they, less spectacular in the day's
news, are waging an endless war against the physical and social ailments which oppress humanity. Much of this crusading for health and truth is haphazard, its full effectiveness
lost in'a maze of false starts and cross purposes. Major vic-.
tories of the crusade are won by philanthropic groups which .
and this country can be justly
proud of all the world’s organized philanthropies, the Rockefeller Foundation, had its inception here.
This institution’s noble work does not touch many of us
directly, here in California, but its gifts to the state’s universities.and colleges have been fumerous and generous. Among
educational activities the Foundation has sponsored here are
map long-range campaigns,
training and research in public
of vitamins and hormones, research in biology, chemistry.
physiology, endocrinology and plant genetics.
Chartered simply ‘“‘to promote the well-being of. man‘kind throughout the world,”
spends its millions for such diverse purposes as maintenance
of the Ambelokipi Health Center in Athegs. excavation and
‘estoration of the Terrace of Persepolis in Iran. and the development of dramatic technique at the University of North
Carolina. Its future value is assured by an expressed
clination to change the strategy of attack in order to meet
human problems that are new and challenging.""—Contributadministration, chemical study

MINE NOTES
REOPENING OF GENTNER GOLD
MINE
Mrs. Walter C. Sheck of near Alleghany was a Nevada City visitor
yesterday. Her husband is reopening
the Gentner Gold Mining company
property of Alleghany for San Francisco interests. The property is three
and a half miles west of Alleghany
and was formerly the old Ambrose
mine. In 1932 while Mr. Scheck was
employed at the Golden Center mine
at Grass Valley Mrs. Sheck gained
quite a lot of fame for donning over‘alls and doing a man’s work holding
a lease on the old McKenzie mine
near Alleghany under a bond and
lease.
