SIGNALLING DEVICE
FOR SHAFT MINES
A new signaling device for shaft
mines with a talking circuit between
e@age or skip and the engine house is .
described in an information circular of the United States Bureau of
Mines, Department of Commerce,
written by L. D. Stewart and E. V.
Potter, Jr.
There has been a “great need for,
a@ signaling system that could be operated from the cage and several,
successful methods have. been de‘velopd. However, none is as complete as the method described,
which is believed to be the only one!
with a talking circuit, a feature
which is believed to be the only one
with a talking circuit,’ a “feature
which in itself is a great advantage.
Two loud speakers are installed in
the engine house— _ the cage loud
speaker which is always in service
and the skip speaker which is used
when required. With this system it
is possible to signal the engineer
from both cage and skip from any
place in the shaft whether or not
the cage or skip is moving, and it is
Possible at all times to talk with the
engineer by using the telephone.
Another added feature is the safety switch eonnected with the rope
in the bonnet of the cage.. This
Switch is normally open, but closes
and automatically gives the stop
signal whenever the rope _ slacks,
which is a decided benefit if the
cage becomes -stalled in the ae
when being lowered. :
A full description of the electrical circuit, apparatus required, and
cost of installation is given in Information Circular 6487, “A New Signalling Devise for Shaft Mines. With
Comments and Suggested Modifications,’’ copies of which may be obtained free from the U: S. Bureau
of Mines, Department of Commerce,
Washington, D. C.

DEPARTM E
By J. M. Swazey
I have pleasant memories of the old
home
Sweet memories of childhood days;
Memories of the fields I used to
roam
And the woods I'll love always.
’Twas there, one bright June morn,/.
While the sun shone brightly above,
I .in that old fashioned home was
: born
Sent down for a mother to love.
’Twas there I received all the care
That a mother’s fond heart. can
bestow,
I was rocked to sleep by the mummuring pines
As they slowly rocked to and fro.
Those were the days of sunshine
When the night,. meant a happy
tomorrow, é
But the babies of yesterday, are the
men_of today
Thrown out into a world of sorrow.
Though life has plenty of sunshine
Plenty of thrills and charms;
Don’t we all yearn for the old home
And the Haven of a mother‘s arms?
D3.
Each day Iam_ growing
restless, ; .
IT can never be happy until
I get back to the old home
Standing alone on the Hill.
